It's far from MicroSoft's worst, but it's definitely a noticeable downgrade in a lot of ways.

We have to "upgrade" to Windows 11 at work this year, and it sucks from a software compatibility standpoint. Too many of our lab systems work on anything from Windows 98 to Windows 10, but Windows 11 is too doodoo face to be compatible.

I said same, but probably No. I am using it because I got a new laptop last year, but I remember my old computers said they couldn't run Win11. It doesn't seem that different than 10. I am sure there are under the hood things I don't notice or odd quirks, that I just accept by now.

tldr I mean Windows 7 was probably the best version of Windows ever some ppl still use that :D

Oh crap you got 10k Karma! Anyways my older laptop still works but it is all fricked up. Just for various reasons. It originally ran Windows 8 base with a full touchscreen. The touchscreen was a nice novelty, but I didn't need it :D I would sometimes forget I could touch it when I pointed something out to ppl.

We do have some systems that are data-restore-only that run Windows 7, and as it turns out, one of our lab groups has some Liquid Scintillation Counters that still run DOS software from the early '90s and are still connected to dot matrix printers.

10 > 11 > 8

The main thing I dislike about windows 11 is how it handles updates but thats a holdover from Windows 10. They are introducing a new update mechanism for business editions I think which will make updates behave a little more similar to linux updates, I'm unsure if thats carrying across to Windows home etc but it will make updates a bit less hostile

For the most part things seem fine to me. I've grown mostly accustomed to the new settings menu, so as they move stuff around more its less of a drama for me

That was massive. Windows 8 was designed I think for their failed Windows phone and they just shoe horned it into every other system whether it was a PC or Laptop. It was really dumb. Windows 8.1 eventually made it better, but it still was a dumb release.

I like my jagged edges, pointy corners, and bleak aesthetics, so Windows 98 remains my "most pleasing appearance" OS. I loved Windows 7 and have no problems with Windows 10, but Windows 11 with its round corners and bright visuals can go suck eggs.

Protip: Use Windows 11 LTSC. It's just Windows 11 without any Microsoft ecosystem or Copilot AI bullshit. On its own, I like W11 better than W10 mainly for its design language. If Microsoft actually gave a shit about consistently adopting Fluent Design they'd probably end up with the best-looking operating system since OS X Leopard through Mavericks.

i have 10 on my laptop and 11 is on my desktop(that i'm using now). i built this desktop a few years ago and migrated my windows 10 from an old laptop to this and said screw it i'll do the free upgrade to 11 and instantly regretted it. i've gotten used to it and end up using 11 like 90% of the time since i barely use my laptop anymore unless i wanna use it while sitting on my couch. but i'm keeping 10 on my laptop till i get forced to upgrade. was hoping microsoft would just some stuff to let you customize stuff to work like 10 without having to mod stuff to do it.

I recall having a conversation with a colleague about W10 being better. He literally was like; "yeah, but docking and multi-destops are pretty innovative".

These feature have been done better on Linux for well over a decade if not longer.

The interface for it is also needlessly frustrating. Youre not beating Gnome. Just copy and the past the way it was done there and be done with it.

Yeah shitty as Win11 is, it's still the less hassle free option. There are uses for Linux, gaming rigs and general home use isn't one of them.

Agree to disagree. I think I have like 3 shortcuts memorized in total and can whip around desktops like nobodies business.

Every other time I try to multitask on Windows 11 I'm finding myself having to look up how to tab desktops because I did it accidently.

On most GNOME setups you can actually most everything with the mouse. Which I know is cringe for a Linux user - but even just mousing around is so much more responsive and intuitive.

Why the heck can't I pin a window to remain on top of everything? Thats a GNOME feature that's hard to live without once you use it a lot.

I've been fine with the aesthetic differences between 11 and 10, but one thing I like about 11 is that you can put off Windows updates for up to 5 weeks. I can live with installing updates and rebooting once a month, handled manually. But I could never find a way to disable auto updates Windows 10. Stop / disable services? They get restarted. Registry setting suggestions? Ignored. Home version, so no group policy settings.

Wake up one morning to find my machine rebooted for updates, losing various open windows. Then it starts nagging again a couple days later.

Glad I found out I could prevent the auto reboots with a stream running. I keep a 144p 24/7 YouTube stream running when I'm not there to prevent the reboots. System still nags about it, but I'll do it on my own schedule, thanks. Sucks when the stream craps out, but that doesn't happen too often. Also used that streaming trick to block my last employer's 15 minute screen lock on their computers. Living along and working from home during the pandemic, didn't need the screen to lock out.

The UI is, objectively, inconsistent. Some parts don't conform to dark settings (like file properties and old settings menus). There are several different styles of modern UIs.

This is probably one only the only times I agree with MagicMarth.

Both installing and playing games on Linux is pretty dead simple. Hell, the last distro I used came with a custom launcher that connects to both Steam and GoG.

The games will often run better well, because W11 is needlessly bloated and up until recently had an aweful screen manager that chopped performance down even further.

I shouldn't go from playing Space Engine on a Valve Index with full fps, to not being able to run VR at all.

Yes, yes it is. It's just 10 with a nicer UI and some easily removed extra bloat. 10 was full of bloat too.

I cannot fathom though why people are so attached to the classic hierarchical Start Menu. It takes fucking forever to drill down into hierarchical menus with a mouse. Just hit the Windows key and start typing the program you want, it's infinitely faster, and then it doesn't matter what the Start Menu looks like. I've been doing it that way since Windows 7 at the very latest.
