Some time back I had a bunch of users submit a ranking of Persona characters. We had quite a few votes, and now I've finally gotten around to finishing tallying them. I gave a little more weight to people's top 20 lists, and I think we've wound up with a pretty good list. We'll see, though.

Expect short writeups for characters from Persona 1+2, because I've never played those games! So unless someone submitted a writeup for them, they will get maybe a couple of sentences. I've also done away with the 'rank percentile' because it was confusing to people last time. Instead, I'll state what percent of people had them in their Top 20 (if there were any at all!) and in the Top 10 (again if any at all) as well as Top 5.

Why 202? That's how many characters people ranked. Crazy for a series that's not massive like Final Fantasy was.

Also expect quite a few this week, and then things to slow down when I return to work on Monday.

#202: Nozomi Suemitsu (Persona 3)

Nozomi is our least popular Persona character, which is no huge surprise. He's a character that's easy to hate. He's not a very good friend to Makoto Yuki. Social Links of the Moon Arcana (with one exception) aren't particularly popular. It's one of the weaker arcana in that regard. One of the few characters I always feel uncomfortable befriending. While he does have some supporters (see below), most people generally don't like him.

Nozomi Suemitsu, aka The Gourmet King, is the Moon Arcana Social Link of Persona 3. He's a fairly disgusting individual. For most of his social link, he is the punchline of weight jokes and scatalogical humor. Despite this though, I have a certain like of this character due to what he brings to the game. Persona 3 is a game about different responses to loss, and so it makes total sense to feature a character with obvious mania, aggression, magical thinking, and addiction. I find it in many ways to be one of the more realistic s. links in this regard. - Colliding

#201: Mr. Ekoda (Persona 3)

Mr. Ekoda is a teacher at Gekkoukan High School. He teaches classic literature, and is one of the few teachers in Persona 3 to be part of the main story. He gets berated by Mitsuru at some point, but alas nothing really comes of it. He's not very well liked by your own homeroom teacher, Ms. Toriumi. Ekoda is Fuuka's homeroom teacher. He'll ask questions like the other teachers throughout the game. Were it not for his one part in the main story line, he'd probably be pretty forgettable along with some of the other teachers. Instead, he decided to be awful and he's disliked for a pretty good reason. If he were in Persona 5, he'd be one of those 'no good adults'.

#200: Kenji Tomochika (Persona 3)

Kenji is the Magician Social Link for Persona 3, and our second Persona 3 Social Link character. We're actually getting a few of the Persona 3 characters out of the way quickly. Kenji has a huge crush on one of his teachers, and honestly he's kind of a dick about it. He's definitely not one of those guys who are mates before dates. He ditches you and that hot ramen for the teacher he has the hots for. To think, we could have been hanging out with Junpei instead. Kenji is our first member of the Top 200. He just barely tops Ekoda and Nozomi. It probably help's that he's a little more likeable outside of his social link. You almost have to feel sorry for him at points.

Hanako is basically one big fat joke. The Persona games are not kind to fat characters, and Hanako is no exception. She's often the butt monkey. But it doesn't help that her personality isn't great, either. She puts on a face of confidence, but beneath that she clearly has some insecurity issues. She doesn't play a major part in the game, and I kind of hope she's treated a little better in the rumored Persona 4 Remake. She's a kind of forgettable character, as she only makes a few minor appearances.

Sugimura is a bit of an asshole. Most people probably don't know his name, but most people do hate him. And not in the 'love to hate' way. To avoid spoilers I'll place the rest of the write-up in a spoiler tag! He is engaged to Haru, and he's very much a controlling asshole. It's kind of disappointing we don't get to change his heart, because man he's awful. The way he talks to Haru near the end of the game when she's for some reason still with him (Even though the engagement should be called off) is just really skeevy. He's one of the few karma houdinis in Persona 5. Though I kind of like that, because you can't just fix everyone.

#197: Junya Kaneshiro (Persona 5)

It's hard to talk about this character without going into spoilers. So into the spoiler tag we go. A mob boss, and one of the villains of Persona 5, Kaneshiro probably has one of the least satisfying confessions in the game. Especially after threatening to essentially human traffic Makoto. He's one of the more forgettable villains in the game, despite being such a sleazebag. There's not really much to like, and plenty to hate about him.

Haru's father is another character that isn't well liked from Persona 5. And he's also another character that I can only really talk about behind a spoiler tag. There's not much to like about Okumura. He's part of the conspiracy, so at least he has a deeper role in the plot that's a bit clearer than Kaneshiro. His death is interesting, but also gotten over pretty quickly. Arranging a marriage for his daughter, and basically being Japanese Jeff Bezos isn't really a recipe for a character that people like. Even in a 'love to hate' kind of way. His confession is pretty interesting if only because it leads to the Phantom Thieves being accused of murder, but otherwise he doesn't have much interaction with the main cast which leaves him as a somewhat flat villain. Also a spaceport for a palace is a bit on the nose these days.

Nozomis highest being 33 is insane. Id never have expected him to be in a top 75

Madarame is Yusuke's art teacher and mentor. He's also a famous artist, well known for his work The Sayuri. He's also the ruler of the second palace, and he's pretty vile. He stole the Sayuri from Yusuke's mother, and then let her die. He also stole many of his students works and passed them off as his own. He's not a great followup to Kamoshida, but then again, as many of the Persona 5 villains are here at the bottom of the lists, not many were. Madarame's ghastly museum isn't very easy on the eyes.

I'm impressed someone remembered their names. I'll spoil tag the writeup, but it's worth reading for those who don't remember them from Persona 5. They are a part of one of the confidants.

Pure hate. They worked their foster son to death for their own means, blamed his teacher for it, and railroaded her into after-hours work to keep the cash flowing in from her guilt. They even had the gall to appear at Kawakami's hospital bed to blackmail her for more money or ruin her ability to teach. They are pure scum. It was nice to finally confront their shadows and make them confront their truths and guilt. - Mega Mana

This character doesn't even really appear in the game, but he is mentioned. He's from Persona 5 Strikers for those scratching their heads. He killed himself before you ever get to meet him. He's an AI developer who worked on stealing people's desires. Not really much to say about him, as you never get any scenes with him. Just a little backstory, and a dungeon.

The SIU Director makes several appearances in the game. He's Sae's boss, and is extremely sketchy. He's also voiced by Kirk Thornton who voices a few other characters in Persona. For some reason we never get his name. My first time playing, I thought he'd be a palace ruler, but was disappointed to find out he was not. He does get some karmic retribution for his part in the conspiracy, being killed by the very people he was helping.

Honestly did not know who he was when I saw his name. And I've played Persona 5 at least 3 times. But I'll let the one person who DID remember them talk about them! Again, they are a minor social link character

After Kamoshida is gone and Ryuji is working back up to his self-confidence, this jerk pops in to try and speedrun becoming a worse coach. He's bragging about setting up a kid's injury, using and tossing another kid, and being such an incredible heel. He only shows up for a single scene and gets undone immediately. But seriously **** these guys hard. One of the biggest reasons so many Persona 5 villains are at the bottom is because they're just that: villains. There's no greyness or real depth to them compared to previous antagonistic characters. Persona 3 had the thirteen reverse tarot demons, Persona 4 had shadows of otherwise positive or layered characters, and Persona 5 just had straight up deadly sinners.

The fact that three Persona 3 characters still fall below these characters pleases me greatly. **** Kenji and his awful social link.

Ango Natsume is a famous writer, and is a character in Persona 5 Strikers. He shares a lot in common with Madarame, but he reflects a bit more on his mistakes than Madrame does. You can almost feel sorry for him, because he wants to be a real writer and is trying to live up to his famous grandfather. I'd like to think that he actually succeeds in his goal once he stops plagiarizing people.

I'm assuming this was Mr. Yamada, rather than Mr. Yamata. He is the geography teacher and makes some inappropriate comments. He's not particularly memorable as far as teachers go, but is almost as skeevy as Kamoshida.

Wilson Fisk! The Principal of Shujin Academy, from the moment you meet him it's easy to hate him. Oddly enough, he's one of the few characters who tries to do the right thing without you changing his heart. Though his threatening Makoto early in the game makes him easy enough to hate. He doesn't play as big of a role in the game as you might initially think. But he clearly let Kamoshida get away with a lot of stuff. I feel like it was weird making him part of the conspiracy, though.

The teacher Kenji has a crush on. It would crush him to know he was ranked below her. One of the few teachers you don't actually have. She plays a slightly bigger role in FemC's route. And her leading Kenji on is kind of a bitch move. Also according to Ms. Toriumi, she stuffs her bra. I can at least understand why he has a crush on her.

Kanamin Kitchen's manager, she's another character in Persona 4: Dancing All Night. She can seem a bit cruel at times. Persona 4 Dancing doesn't have a lot of a storyline, but what is there, she probably plays a bigger role than most of the others.

A disciple of Madarame, Natsuhiko actually plays a bit of a role in the plot. He is a required Mementos target, and is the first to ask the Phantom Thieves to change Madarame's heart after his own change of heart. While not the most significant character in the game, he does play a part. And he gives a bit more backstory to Madarame.

Going to double check all the totals before re-checking the list tomorrow. Seems some characters didn't transfer for some reason. But so far it's only been one character for each list.

I had Suemitsu at 131 but you listed as 130 as the lowest! Maybe a tiny error, but I hope I was the one who rated him the lowest still!

Hanako's highest rank should be 29th (which should be noted is still a last place vote)

Yes and no. Yes, it was out of spite, but not for them. I ranked them just to put Kenji even further away from everyone else.

Well also now that I think back, I didn't like how Mr. Ekoda was listed in the Persona 3 list but teachers like Mr. Ono weren't. And how wasn't Kobayakawa on there either with how much he featured throughout P5? And with hating on Mr. Yamauchi more than Kamoshida I just went full teacher.

But yes, these teachers suck.

Mr. Yamada is a gross lech. Kanou took advantage of a student (whether it actually went as far as Kenji & Maya think it did is up for interpretation, but Rio's route would confirm using him to buy her expensive gifts and such). Nakayama won't stop talking about her failing marriage. Usami doesn't give a shit; she does her job but she'd clearly rather be doing anything else.

Mr. Ushimaru's a curious one. Yeah, he's a jerk and calls you out for not paying attention in class and can be a downright ass, but ROYAL SPOILERS we get some sense of tragedy in his past with how he acts in the new world, and it colors how I see him as a person and want him to be fixed and healed. And I remember somebody said they loved his classes because they could get free skill points, so that's a plus.

I did a clean 150 characters. My hate line is around 145ish, my love to hate line is around 130ish, and we're just in general dislike territory. I forget where begrudging dislike starts, probably around 90?

I ranked all these Dancing All Night characters just to push other characters farther down the ranks (like Kenji)

I only ranked 80 because I have only minimal experience with 3/4.

But I definitely made sure 1/2 got some points.

I ranked almost everyone listed other than P1-2 characters, 5R characters and stuff like Dancing & Strikers I think. I mightve been one of the highest Hanako rankers who didnt have her last. Shes terrible, but her & Kashiwagi are funny NPCs

Should have everything fixed now. Key word, should. Just a few characters who's ranking didn't transfer over.

Mika is Ann's rival in Persona 5, and she can be a bit of a bitch. She's definitely cutthroat, but she's also not exactly wrong. She's a fairly interesting minor character. Oddly enough, despite her antagonistic personality toward Ann, she is not a mementos target at all. You'd almost expect her to be, especially if you've finished other Confidants first. But we do not change her heart.

Part of Ohya's Confidant. I honestly don't know anything about him, except that he's trying to stop Ohya from investigating her partner's case. He is a Mementos target, and you have to change his heart. Though it seems like he was pressured into it which makes him one of the iffier targets IMO.

Mrs. Terauchi is the English and Japanese Teacher at Gekkoukan High School. She doesn't have a huge role in the game, but as one of your teachers she will ask you questions occasionally which will boost your stats. She has a husband in India. But aside from that, she's not particularly memorable like some of the other teachers.

Belladonna is the counterpart to Nameless & the other original attendant of the Velvet Room. She sings while he plays the piano. ...Unfortunately, while he at least looks cool, she... has nothing going for her. But it would be silly to include one half of the Velvet Room's music duo without the other, so I've added her here near the absolute bottom of the list for the sake of completion. ...I suppose I could have argued for including "Nameless & Belladonna" as a joint entry like Justine & Caroline, but I *like* Nameless and having her drag him down would make me sad. - FluttershyPony

Minoru Inoue is Rise Kujikawa's former manager. He doesn't play a major role in Persona 4, but still has a minor role in Persona 4: Dancing All Night and even in Persona 4: Arena Ultimax. He wants Rise to return to being an Idol. We really don't know much about him beyond that.

It's the Afro Teacher from Gekkoukan High School. He teaches math. For the longest time I mistook him for a woman. He's actually somewhat memorable for the afro and his excitement for math. That's why I can remember he's a math teacher without looking it up.

Was Mika in vanilla P5? Dont recognize her at all. As for Mr. Miyahara he was actually called Ms Miyahara in Persona 3 Reload until a later patch changed the name to Mr. so I guess lots of people couldnt tell if he was a man or woman lol
