Marathon in name only

Look how they massacred my boy

It was never going to be anything other than marathon in name only. The original trilogy very explicitly wrapped up. We know exactly how this entire universe ends. There is no story left for them to tell other than filler events that don't matter.

We've known this from the very first release trailer. We know what planet this game is on, and we know what happens to it. At best this is a Halo Reach situation.

This could've gone over better if it wasn't called Marathon. It's an incredibly cynical product.

I'm disgusted but not surprised. How dare they use one of Durandal's quotes for this slop.

I don't want it to fail exactly, but no matter how good it may end up being, I'm not taking part in it.

I would be willing to bet that the AI voice we hear during the trailer is durandal. It's got to be either him or Tycho. Either way, having one of them being a glorified combat announcer seems like the kind of kick in the teeth that this particular iteration of Bungie is going for.

It's going to be Durandal, both because it's obvious, and because they used the same voice while straight ripping one of his lines.

It's a first person shooter series developed by Bungie that was first released on the Macintosh around the same time as doom. It's actually responsible for a shocking number of firsts in the genre and if I'm being completely fair really deserves the spot that Doom has taken by being on a much more popular platform.

The original trilogy is basically about you as the main character helping an AI that has gained sentience attempt to escape the solar system so it can start planning for how to survive the heat death of the universe.

Edit: and I guess something else worth mentioning is that it is heavily implied the HALO Series exists in the same universe and that Master Chief may in fact be AI himself.

I loved marathon 2 in particular. It's such a cool story. Also for anyone interested all three games are on steam and permanently free to play.

TIL in addition to being freeware they're also on Steam. I need to go find the old custom campaigns people made back in the day, I'm sure they're still floating around somewhere.

Why even call it Marathon? I doubt there are so many Marathon fans to make it a genius marketing move, but even if there were, it's not Marathon. It just sours the whole thing right off the bat instead of having the chance to stand on its own.

Yeah, the only reason I've heard of the series is because of mandaloregaming and If I hadn't gotten them for free, his videos gave me very little interest in trying such old and esoteric games. There's no way the extraction shooter crowd and Marathon fans overlap at all. The greybeards don't like what they did with the name and the kids have never heard of it.

I think it's the same thing that happened with Prey. Something like it's easier to update copyright and whatever else with an existing brand than it is to register a new name. They wanted to make an extraction shooter and had a dusty old FPS sitting on a shelf so there you go.

They also work perfectly on the steam deck which is awesome as hell. Having portable marathon is amazing. Wish the remaster wasn't stuck on the 360.

I'm gonna get the game because I need marathon to exist in my life but yeah. Would be nice if this does well and they set up more marathon games. It could be Sonys Halo if they stop with the live service garbage

God, it feels so clinical and dry of personality. Almost feels like what Faceball 2000 would look like if made today.

The trilogy is available on Steam for free, via the fanmade source port, Aleph One (Bungie wasn't involved with its development, but they had released the assets to all three games for free ages ago and gave the Aleph One devs their official blessing).

There's always the good ones out there (and again, they're available for free). We can all pretend that Concord 2- I mean Sony's Marathon just never happened as far as the rest of the series is concerned.

I don't really understand the hate this is getting. It's not amazing looking, but i doesn't look bad either. I'd prefer to see more before writing it off.
