Probably just biased since I've never done these things, but smoking and drinking. Smoking in particular, seems like a very expensive habit to develop for no benefit. Drinking can at least ease nerves and I suppose if you're inclined can get you drunk. Smoking is what, just to pass the time? It basically amounts to fidgeting? Just doing something to occupy you for a few moments.

I understand it's an addiction, so no judgements. I just don't understand how so many people develop it, especially with how expensive it is.

Travel probably the biggest one.

Concerts, gambling, alcohol, smoking, flags, excessive lawn care, and probably quite a lot more really.

But if it makes them happy then whatever floats their boats.

Alcohol (shout out to post #2 for the idea)

Concert/festival lifestyle. Nothing but respect, but thats not for me. Too expensive and too much traveling.

Gym Memberships (great for some people, but I basically live at an outdoor free gym)

Coffee. Dude, youre basically drinking a milkshake at this point. Oh, and it was like $12.

Streaming subscriptions. There are always going to be *much* cheaper alternatives to paying for streaming services.

The feeling that you HAVE to have the new piece of tech on day one. PS5, iPhone, you name it.

Gambling. I used to grab a Mega Millions

Yeah, drugs arent going to get you anywhere good in life. Now everythings got fentanyl in it, so literally nothing is safe except for weed you get directly from a dispensary. I dont trust ordering that stuff online, either.

I'm not the poster you're responding to, but I hate food delivery apps for these reasons:
- it can cost more than the entire order itself
- you need to tip on top of that already huge cost
- the food exchanges hands with someone who doesn't work at the restaurant and has no real incentive to deliver the food fast and still warm
- countless horror stories about food app transactions

At the place I order Chinese from, the delivery is free with a minimum order amount.
When I order pizza, the delivery fee is like $3. Huge difference between this and food delivery apps.
We do uber eats like once or twice a month as treat instead of finding a dog sitter and going out.

I still go out to pick up the pizza or chinese rather than pay for delivery

When you start out it works quite well to ease nerves.

The issue is that is shifts real quick from "a cigarette will calm me down" to "a cigarette will calm me down because nicotine withdrawal is making me agitated."

holy shit, this! Easily this.

Id also say sports cards too. These serve no real utility other than looking at. At least buying toys someone could theoretically play with if you chose to. Pokmon/MTG/Lorcana cards and other card game types of formats though have playability given they are technically games, even if a large demographic only use it to collect for $.

I think trading/collectable cards are kind of cool tbh. I actually have a set from when I was a kid, but they're not sports related. They're these:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/3/3f15495e.jpg

Still sealed!

This image is from the interwebz and not the full set, but I'm pretty sure mine has all 144 cards in it.

Worth about $35, which is kinda cool, lol. I don't really even remember where I got them. I guess I went to some kind of museum and found them at the gift shop and got my dad to buy them for probably like $2 in like '94 or so, lol.

Anyway, yeah, I can definitely agree that some of the rarer ones that cost absurd amounts are ridiculous.

I use an app and its sometimes cheaper than going to the vendor myself. Depends on the app and location.

I agree they are kind of cool sure. I personally have my own. At the end of the day though its just colored cardboard that loses inherent value based off imperfections that grading companies examine. To me, its wild that a 100$ card could turn into 5-10 k based off of someones subjective opinion. Might as well be legalized gambling accessible and in a lot of ways catered to kids.

The sports card ecosystem seems less sensible than say shoe or toy culture from a practicality standpoint is all Im saying.

Im with you on resting vacations. The ones I was forced to go on were some of the most boring weeks of my life. Spending thousands to just sit on a beach or pool and do nothing all week. The only thing to look forward to was your next meal before you spent hours looking at water again. Then waking up the next morning thinking Fuck, another day of this
We could have just stayed home all week and done nothing.

I'd love that kind of vacation honestly. I've never cared much for the touristy sightseeing stuff. I'd rather relax in the fancy resort or go to a theme park. My most desired vacation spots are all beaches or cities with major theme parks lol.

Sure you can just as easily "do nothing" at home, but sometimes a change of scenery helps with relaxing too. My friend does that sometimes. Just goes to a hotel or airbnb out of town for a few days just to get away from it all. Nothing crazy like an expensive 5 star hotel.

$40k isn't particularly outlandish, either. I mean, it is, but like, I just did a Google search for 2025 Ford F-150 (a few years ago, the F-150 was the most popular vehicle on US roads; haven't bothered to check if it's still true) and the MSRPs I'm seeing range from $48k-$74k.

The most I've ever paid was $15k, myself, and that hurt.
