All hobbies are luxuries... not necessarily a monetary luxury, but having a luxury of time or disposition is a luxury that many people don't have.
Not all hobbies are Luxury Hobbies however. Otherwise the term is pretty fucking redundant.
I think that distinction needs to be made.

Anyway, carry on. Enjoying the thread :)

Some of the takes in this topic are hilarious.

You either buy the switch or you dont. Nintendo dont have to make it more accessible for you and you dont have to buy it. This is really basic stuff.

This I agree with which is why I was set off by people continuing to argue that it was luxury hobby in posts where that distinction was made.

But at some point it should be intuitively known that referring to an item that is a fixture of even below average income families (which a Nintendo Switch is) as luxury anything sounds ridiculous and shouldnt be used to dismiss the ire about price increases.

CEing up a topic.

I'm imagining this topic in an alternate universe where topics can have more than 500 posts.

By 1000, we'd have forgotten about the definition of luxury and started arguing about the pyramids or whatever. By 2000, we'd have probably worked our way back around to Nintendo somehow.

A luxury hobby does not mean only rich people can do it. It just means it's more expensive and isn't a necessity. An iPhone is a luxury item, but if somebody wants to save up their money for one, they absolutely can. Video games are expensive. They always have been. It's why rental and used markets took off, because it was a way to enjoy them without as high of an entry cost.

The highest end, newest product being a bit more expensive than people'd like is not "shitting on the poors."

Game prices have been consistently in the $60-70 range since as far back as the 1990s. We just didn't feel the cost as badly back then because we were kids/teens who likely didn't buy the games ourselves (our parents did, or we got them as gifts, or we rented them from Blockbuster or similar stores) and the economy was just stronger in general. But that doesn't change the fact that the prices have absolutely not changed from 30 years ago until today; we just notice it now because we're paying for the games with our own money, which doesn't stretch as far as it used to.

When they moved to optical discs, they got a lot cheaper. I seem to remember PS1 games launching for $40, but I'm not convinced of that.

PS2 games definitely launched at $50 though.

That sounds right to me. I was a kid at the time so I didn't buy any of these games, but I do recall $50 being the standard, and then it was $60 for a long time. It's surprising we didn't get $70 earlier.

Right. I wasn't saying they didn't change, I was simply stating that gaming was always an expensive hobby. It didn't just recently become expensive. I assume the pushback on that is because, like you stated, we just didn't feel it directly as much back then.

This. I think the disconnect is that "it's a luxury hobby" and "hobbies are a luxury," though sounding similar have different meanings that some can't differentiate these days.

Luxury hobbies are innately expensive hobbies; video games are comparatively cheaper than... Many other hobbies. Unless you get in to the highest end and but literally every major release out, but so it goes for most hobbies.

As someone who absolutely loves building models, that has been easily way more expensive than gaming.

A lot of hobbies have different tiers of expense, few people bother to get in that far on a hobby to where it becomes a "luxury hobby" honestly.

PS5 Pro: $699
PS3: $499 or $599 (equivalent to $780 and $930, today)
Switch 2: $450

???

Are you seriously asking why there may have been a difference in reaction to consoles that cost over 150% what the Switch 2 costs?

Though, yes, people absolutely defended the PS3, because "It's a blu-ray player."

Fortunately for us, Sony fans aren't as blindly loyal as Nintendo fans (although they do have those), so the PS3 was eventually reduced in price. But again, this isn't about console prices to the majority, and I hate how posters keep letting them control the narrative.

PS3's initial prices got clowned on so bad that it became a gaming fandom meme that is still joked about to this day.

The PS5 pro gets absolutely shat on in practically every single comment section, forum, and social media in general when its brought up. Even in the playstation subreddit with a lot of PS owners and so you would naturally expect a lot of hardcore sony fans to hang around/be the most numerous on the reddit the common PS5 pro opinion is "yeah fuck that" or "yeah don't need that". Even in it's own PS5 pro subreddit that is going to have a lot of people that actually own one you'll get people who will say things like "yeah, I like what it does for XXX game etc. etc. Price is still ass though". Like there is barely anyone that I actually ever saw defending the 699.99+another 79.99 if you want to use discs since there is no pro that just comes with one already.

*Regardless I do notice there is still a ton of deflecting since most people that rag on the switch 2 is talking about the 80 dollar mario kart world thing and not the actual switch 2 console price.*

Like someone said above, I think people are confusing hobbys being a luxury and a particular hobby being a luxury hobby.

The original statement that began all of this was "Gaming is a luxury hobby. You're not entitled to any of it." Which implies it's expensive and therefore a luxury hobby. However, poor people can afford to play video games. So by definition, it is not a luxury hobby.

A poor person can afford a luxury cruise if they save up money, that doesn't mean it's not a luxury.

There's nothing saying poorer people can't enjoy luxury items, they just obviously have to more carefully pick and choose which ones they can enjoy, compared to somebody with more money.

Your average poor/even middle class person can't just plop down a couple hundred bucks for a video game system literally any time they want.

That's also fair. It's also fair if you still choose to buy one of their $80 games. Without those customers, the used market wouldn't exist. I just get annoyed at the people who try to defend the companies choices, and in the case of the topic title, foot in mouth.

Compare new console release to previous generation. You get like one or two years on the average of support.
the wii u was the poor one out cuz too many factor killed it even tho i liked the console, and as shown nintendo still supported 3ds even tho they had switch out as well up to 2020, so i figure they will support switch since it did well unlike wii u plus with these tariff shit i figure they intend to support longer since it's install base is bigger then their new console
