There's a lot of memes about how every JRPG ends with you killing God, or else the godlike incarnation of Evil/darkness/despair etc.

What games buck that trend tho? Or, what game's final boss subverted your expectations in terms of identity/scale/scope?

For the sake of this topic, a "JRPG" is a game whose design is clearly influenced by classic RPGs developed in Japan, but does not need to be a game which was itself made in Japan.

you fight God halfway through the game instead.

Lost Odyssey more or less just has you fighting a dude.

And although it isn't a JRPG, I'd like to give special mention to Demon's Souls whose final boss was just sad and pathetic (by design).

Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden

The first form of the final boss is a literal one winged angel version of Charles Barkley called Shadow Barkley full of JRPG tropes.

However, his second form is simply T-Rex Barkley. It is just Charles Barkley's head pasted on the body of a T-Rex.

Sort of. (Major Star Ocean 3 spoilers!) The characters find out they're just characters in an MMORPG and the final boss is the creator of it. So technically he's like the god of their world.

You could say Tales of Berseria makes it seem like you're fighting God, but if you go through the bonus dungeon you find out he was really more of a mindless emotion eater the other elemental gods made as a loophole so the real gods wouldn't smite the world.

The entire Mega Man Battle Network series, by the very premise of it, every battle is basically just over top computer maintenance, at its core. Though even then, the internet mafia & the OG internet as some mindless amoeba of assimilation are still interesting final battles, regardless. Really makes me lament that the second half of the series drifts away from the core premise, somewhat, even if they're vast improvements gameplay wise.
