I think "it's a modern Ubisoft open world game that plays like a modern Ubisoft open world game" was basically the expectation from the start, it's a matter if if you're into the "Ubisoft Formula" or not.

damn i love stabbing a guy in the neck and seeing him lose 1/10th of his health odyssey was great

so turn on one hit assassination just like you should have did in odyssey

Yeah, I finally said fuck it and turned on the one hit assassination.

don't do the option where you just press attack once and you do the whole combo string automatically, you're just going to end up attacking air more often than not though

Its the Guaranteed Assassination one. I just spend the rest of my time dying to other things.

Valhalla certainly did. Origins was good if you're not a completionist and just want to get a moderate amount of the game done, otherwise it's a chore and a half. Odyssey is a mess that doubled down on the things Origins did different from previous titles.

Back to Valhalla... I wanted to like that one because of my heritage, but it really did so much wrong. So very wrong, in fact, the devs stopped halfway into a planned dlc for it, and decided to change its assets and try to lean closer to classic AC games' gameplay before selling that as a full game (Mirage).

I hate to sound like some elderly curmudgeon or hipster, but maybe AC should have died when Ezio did. This is coming from someone who liked Black Flag, Syndicate, and most of Origins.

considering valhalla is the most successful of all the games in the series, maybe you're in the low minority for that take, not that i disagree with you, but clearly a hell of a lot of people did. game sold like, over 10 or 20 million and was the first game to earn them a billion bucks

and also odyssey fuckin rocked shit, it's the best one

Im going to wait until this game is 10 bucks for Black Friday.

From a narrative perspective, it should have died with Desmond.

From a game perspective, I enjoyed Blag Flag, Rogue, Syndicate, and Odyssey (except for the modern day parts, which were crap), so I'd have to say there's been too much worthwhile Ass Creed post-Ezio to agree with the premise.

I was going to say that Valhalla came out during Covid lockdowns, and it probably benefited from a captive audience desperately looking for something to do. But I think my sense of timing might be off and it might actually have released a bit after that.

Though like most forms of entertainment, it definitely benefited from coasting on the success of its predecessor. Odyssey was arguably one of the best modern AC games, so people who liked it were more likely to buy Valhalla. Whereas people who didn't like Valhalla became less likely to buy its successors.

Personally, I punched out after Odyssey. I'm just not seeing anything in the newer games that really reaches out and grabs me, and I'm not overly interested in any of the current settings (or the modern day storyline).
