I fucking love rice, but I'm not in love with making it on the stove. No one has been able to qualify how much better rice cookers are over pots on the stove, so I'm kind of walking blind here. I hear Zojirushi is an amazing brand, but they can't be the only option that people like. Not super into spending $200 CAD on something that specific.

Zojirushi or bust! They also make great thermal mugs, will hold ice cubes or keep your coffee hot all damn day.

Get an Instant Pot, makes rice about as well as a rice cooker but also does a ton of other things, it's just overall more useful and takes up about the same footprint in your kitchen.

It's a highly regarded household brand in Japan, like Kitchenaid in the US.

Ive had a zojirushi for 10+ years. Still works without issue.

Worth every penny if you cook rice regularly.

I have the Instant Pot brand rice cooker. It has settings so you can switch between white rice, brown rice, oatmeal, and quinoa. I've had bad luck trying to use it for oatmeal, so I just stick to using it for white rice; and with white rice it comes out divine each and every time.

And I guess the major difference between using a rice cooker vs using the stove top is that with a dedicated rice machine you can still cook your rice while also freeing up stove space. The other major difference is how idiot proof it makes cooking rice. So long as you follow the instructions and use the correct ratio of water to rice then you'll never cook it wrong. Set it and forget it. With the stove you have to actually pay attention the whole time.

How much rice do you cook at a time?

I have a good, simple rice cooker for 1-2 people and it was pretty cheap off of Amazon.

I'm sure you can find something similar at the US Amazon site.

we also have the instant pot with the air fryer option so its nice having all those appliances wrapped up in one

After waffling on it for a good long while, I sought some YouTube videos to either dissuade me or push me into the purchase. I decided to bite the bullet on a Zojirushi. $200 CAD with tax. What types of rice do I buy for this thing? I know I can buy the bags of rice that you need to wash before cooking, but I primarily use Uncle Ben's, which requires no such thing.

Honestly this. So long as you don't get the cheapest of the cheap, they should work fine. I cheaped out on mine (it was like $16) and the auto shut off on it sucks. It always burns the rice at the bottom before it turns off the heat. My gf bought a $40 one from Target and it works so much better than mine does.

Here's the exact one she has if you want to look at it:

Edit: Nevermind, you just bought one sounds like lol.

Even cheap ones are pretty damn great, they just make it a far easier task since the thing knows exactly how long to cook it.

The notion that you need a top end one to have a good experience is absurd. I guess some of the pricier ones might allow larger batches though so if you have a large family that lives with you that might be a factor.

Zojirushi. $200 isn't a lot for a product that will last longer than you'll be alive. I have friends that are using their grandparents Zojirushis. They're the shit. I have a Hello Kitty one my wife got and it's cute.

We used to have Tiger growing up. Quality dropped a bit though, so it's been Zojirushi for the last 15 years or so.

Figure out how much rice you want to make at a time.

Might you make sushi rice? Brown rice? Congee? Black rice?

Do you want the rice cooker to be able to reheat cold rice?

Any rice cooker will do. I've spent as little as $20 on a rice cooker many years ago and it lasted more than a decade. All the rice cooker does is remove one step: turning the heat down at the proper time when steaming rice. For this reason, any cheap rice cooker will do and will yield great results.
