On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom launched his new podcast, This is Gavin Newsom. His first guest? Notorious anti-LGBTQ+ extremist Charlie Kirk. The episode covered a wide range of grievances Kirk and other far-right activists have with Newsom, touching on topics from Black Lives Matter to COVID policies. However, the issue of transgender rights surfaced repeatedly. At one point, Newsom stated he was "completely aligned" with Kirk on transgender participation in sports. He also appeared to express agreement with restrictions on medical care for incarcerated transgender people and limits on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth.

The conversation first turned to transgender athletes when Charlie Kirk referenced a transgender athlete in California, stating, "You, as the governor, should step out and say no, no." Newsom responded, "Right I think its an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. Its deeply unfair," later adding, "Boy did I see how you guys were able to weaponize that issue." Kirk pushed back, insisting he wasnt "weaponizing" the issue. Newsom quickly walked back his comment, replying, "Youre right highlight." He then later said that he agreed with Charlie Kirk that it was not right transgender athletes should play and that he was completely aligned with Charlie Kirk on this issue, blaming a law put in place before he became governor: It turns out in 2014, years before I was governor, there was a law established that established the legal principles that allow trans athletes in womens sports. The issue of fairness is completely legit. I completely align with you, we have to acknowledge it.

yeah, even if he's gonna be wishy washy on that particular part of the issue, the least he could have done is push back on the claims of "chemical castration" and "butchery" being done to children, which is not happening. but he just let that slide. and he should have stuck to his guns about the weaponization phrasing. but i guess he believes the way forward for the democratic party is to cede ideological supremacy to the far-right. very disappointing.

Those aren't the same groups, look at how much longer that second title is.

I'm sorry to say this, but trans people in sports is EXTREMELY unpopular. Even 70% of registered democrats disagree with it. Dems have to let that one go, because they'll lose every time.

One thing that a certain brand of moderate Democrat loves doing is making these big public pronunciations that the Party has gone too far on X issue, or has become too beholden to activists on Y topic. This does a few things:

1. Create eager media coverage like this:

2. Create popular discourse like "well if even a liberal like Gavin Newsom is saying so, the party must have gone off the deep end."
3. Add attention and salience to an issue that they believe is harming public perception of Democrats.

To the extent that they are lifting themselves up, these politicians are doing so at the direct expense of the broader party. But when people have negative views about Democrats, it's the ones in competitive races - the moderates - who suffer as a result. You're still going to have the D next to your name on the ballot, even if you insist you're not one of the bad ones.

It's so stupid because this was a perfect chance to hammer home how stupid the right's hatred of trans people is. I get the whole "walk and chew gum" argument, but the fact the right is SO laser focused on fractions of fractions of people in order to be a complete **** to them while ignoring ACTUAL problems going on is absurd.

Yep, which is why, despite my increasing distaste for the Democratic establishment, I fucking turned out to vote to keep the Republicans out. Actually I don't doubt there are pro-trans rights people who are anti-trans women in sports because the right has fully won that argument in society because it's yet another thing the right can just pump out a 10 second dumb as fuck opinion with 0 thought or nuance to it while the left has to "yes, but..." it to death until people get bored and call them nerds.

It's not so much abandoning them as it is recognizing you cannot win an election on a particular issue. Maybe the country isn't ready for it. Maybe it's going to take time.
