Borderline starring Ray Nicholson and Samara Weaving is on Peacock and I gave it a watch.

Felt more towards thriller comedy than horror comedy like I expected, but it still counts.

Overall, it's a showcase for how outstanding Ray Nicholson could be. He plays a crazy person and does a great job in that role. Like, stand out blow away good. Samara Weaving was also outstanding too, but she's always great. Her character is a pop super star, but it's probably one of her more forgettable roles.

Which is crazy because you put Samara Weaving as a pop super star and it feels like it should be a lot better than it is, but the script was really rough, and I felt like the editing was a bit all over the place. It has some really funny parts in it, but it really just kind of falls flat in terms of story. Tons of wasted potential here to be something a lot better and I kind of don't know how they dropped the ball with it. They needed to cook this script for a while longer.

I'd say it's pretty good, but never escapes that territory. Worth watching if you like Samara Weaving or want to see some outstanding acting chops from Ray Nicholson, but not a big recommend.

Ultimately, I did sort of have a couple of minor issues with Weapons on the whole but at times it really did feel like one of the greats. Typically I reserve placing a film into my personal S tier if I can form a gripe at all about them, but perhaps with some time I will soften my stance on the small issue I had with Weapons. Mostly, it revolves around Gladys. For me, I guess I'm not really sure what I expected the big payoff to actually be but I was a little taken out of it for a just a bit because I just wasn't feeling the character at first. As the film progressed that improved somewhat, but yeah, it just didn't feel super satisfying and perhaps a little too "eh" for me? Still really good though. With still 5 months left in the year, 2025 has now tied 2024 for S rankings.

Slid several films down into my D tier upon further critical thought on them. That goal of 150 seems possible still since I know October will boost the total a fair bit if we try to do the 31 films in 31 days thing from the last years again.

Oh no I meant 2:17 in the afternoon, I just got back from it. (Weapons that is)

I really enjoyed it! I think I might like Barbarian slightly more but I really loved Barbarian so that was gonna be hard to top. The way it was told/played out was probably my favorite aspect, ending is super great as well.

Justin Long cameo took me by surprise lol, a lot of hilarious moments too. Josh Brolin going "WHAT THE FUCK" when waking up from the dream was so real lmao

Good lord. Weapons was such a trip. Zach Cregger is a really, really special filmmaker.

The cinematography blew me away here. He's got such a vision for how to film some of these scenes.

And the plot, I loved the way it was structured and how the story played out. Just a very creative way to let us learn everything.

Some folks seem to have been lost in the final act but I think it really worked well for me. I think what's interesting was how much comedy was in the movie too. There's some legitimately chilling or tense scenes, but I feel like the comedy really landed too. Particularly with the final act, the comedy was a major part of it. I think it's the right call because once you know what's happening, there isn't as much horror there anymore. I think injecting some more comedy into it made it work by that point. Gladys, in particular, reminds me a lot of my own aunt in some ways so it kind of landed with me a lot.

It's a fascinating film though that I'll be thinking of often. Extremely great movie that I think is absolutely worth going out of your way to see. I feel most people will enjoy it, but the degree they enjoy it may vary based on their tastes.

I'll lower your expectations a bit so you don't come in with expectations a bit TOO high. Upon reflection, I think Barbarian is still the better movie, but I really appreciate what this one tried to do a lot. It's still in my S tier, and this one is going to remain a talking point for at least a few weeks, but I think Barbarian will withstand the test of time more. This is basically the same way I feel with Talk to Me versus Bring Her Back. All four are excellent films, but I think both directors/teams nailed it the first time so there was nowhere to go but slightly down.

So something I've started to see around is some people being a little mad it's not like, a through and through horror movie. It definitely has more comedy in it than most traditional horrors, but like, Barbarian did too so if you get the general vibe of Barbarian you'll get the general vibe of this. Actually I'd say this one has more comedy than Barbarian, but not in a bad way. There's a bunch of genuinely hilarious parts that are played great!

I'd have to watch it again to really see how I feel in comparison to Barbarian, my gut says I like Barbarian more but I still loved this. Love how everything is played out and comes together towards the finale.

The scene where Skarsgrd gets his mind blown and the movie transitions to Justin Long singing some crappy pop song in a convertible right after lives rent free in my head.

A lot of Barbarian does, actually! Every now and then I still think about that man taking measuring tape to the torture room in the basement (and continuing to explore without batting an eye), and I crack a smile.

Weapons had me rolling at certain points too. I definitely laughed a lot more at this one than that one.

I'd probably take this one over Barbarian because I do appreciate the uniqueness, and there are certain things I like about how it tells its story namely the changing viewpoints, which I think I mentioned before last year with a film like Strange Darling that I like that type of storytelling.

There's certainly some comedy too, but there's definitely plenty of rattling moments in there and in general the tone of the film is in line with what I'd call a traditional horror film. I'm glad to see it is apparently going to perform very well in the box office this weekend and take #1 from Freakier Friday, very good sign for horror this year with big hits like this.

Okay just got back from Weapons, I definitely liked it, but didn't love it. I for sure liked how the story was structured, I will always like this multiple perspective format, and the cinematography and the actual horror was pretty inventive and brutal at times, but I felt like the film couldn't really get into the depth of the characters emotions much since it was bouncing around a little TOO much, and I do wish we saw other parents thoughts on the matter too. Also, I feel like there's been a too few many "creepy old lady" stories lately too.

But yeah, it's still a good film I think, the comedy worked really well too!

Strange Harvest: Very well done movie, recommend this one if you like true crime type content. The film is a mockumentary that's produced in the style of one of those shows you might have found years ago when the format was popular; detectives sit down and discuss the case, the killer and all the goings on. The film is created by pivoting between various different people giving perspectives as well as police bodycam footage to put you closer to the moments they're talking about. It's an account of a serial killer nicknamed Mr. Shiny, and it goes through his decades long killing spree. Unlike a typical true crime show however, they will show you the extremely gory details that take place and these are just so great looking. Really strong work across the board with how they make this seem so real. There's a touch of the paranormal and the occult in this to give it a darker edge also, and by the end I had to remind myself that this wasn't a real documentary about an occult serial killer I had just watched. As someone that watches a ton of horror films, this was something I hadn't really seen before or at least not in a very long while circa like, Lake Mungo perhaps. It's hard for me to rank this one because of how flawlessly it executes its ideas; but if you like that type of content, this one will hit it out of the park.

Cheat: It's been a while since we've run across a schlocky bad movie, and recently many films released earlier this year have made their way from paid to free on Prime, including this one. So looking at the list so far this year, I kinda wanted to find some of these crap movies they have on Amazon's platform which no doubt has many of them. However... to my surprise, this one wasn't one of them. It's not a "great" movie, but I definitely can't call it bad either. This is a low budget production I'm sure but it always looks and feels decently produced and acted (mostly). I think what this movie has going for it is that it was clearly inspired by great films like The Ring and It Follows. As someone that adores those two movies, I see the inspiration for this clearly I think. Now it isn't one of those two, not even close, but it's surprisingly passable. The synopsis is that a murdered girl haunts this town and preys on people that cheat on their relationship partners. It's a simple premise and it's handled in a simple way you might expect. There was one absolutely bone-shattering jump scare in here ala The Ring, so uncalled for but good lord was it effective. Reviews for this are few and far between; seems a case of very low reviews from some and extremely high praise from people who were clearly members of the production team or their family/friends. Like the last time I came across one of these, I'm somewhere in the middle on that. This is definitely not bad, but it isn't great either. But I'd lean more on the side of it's watchable than it isn't just based on the few merits I mentioned.

Went Up the Hill: This is a New Zealand based production starring Dacre Montgomery and Vicky Krieps as two people dealing with a loss. Jack (Montgomery) never really knew his mother at all and Jill (Krieps) as her wife. It's a horror drama, so there's very little in the way of heavy-handed horror. The premise is that the woman they both were connected to has not moved on to the afterlife for... reasons... and can inhabit their bodies when they are asleep. This gives them a chance to speak to the one they lost, as she possesses the body of the other. Lots of traumatic and personal based horror. It can be a little slow in the beginning and again other times, but I really did like this one and found it to tell a gripping story of emotional and physical abuse. Unique.

Jimmy and Stiggs: Or "Eli Roth Presents:"... so it is what you think it is. It does begin with two Grindhouse style trailers so if you like those, maybe check it out. I'm not going to be too derogatory towards this film and say those were the best part, but they were pretty funny. Roth doesn't direct this, just lends his name (and money I assume) to the project. Joe Begos directs, though I will admit I have not seen any of his other films prior to this one. This is a small budget production filmed entirely within Begos's own apartment, and he also plays the main character (one of only two characters in the entire film). There's not much semblance of a story here; a floundering director/writer gets coked/boozed up and starts thinking aliens are coming for him. Eventually his friend shows up and they both kill some aliens in really over-the-top, 80's style gore with tons of orange blood and goop flying around everywhere. Most of the dialogue consists of the word "fuck" and then descriptions of the aliens. Again, it's a small budget passion project. There was a post credits "making of" that we stuck around to watch, where yeah, I mean it does make you appreciate this film even if you don't quite like it. The man himself seems super earnest and really into his art, in the very likable sort of way. But this isn't quite a film for me, but I'm sure it will check boxes with people who like the splatter horror style.

Witchboard: This is billed as a remake of a 1986 film, which I've never seen. But from what I can tell from looking at it, this is more like a re-imagining and probably would have been fine just billed as its own movie. There might be some nods to the original, not sure, but the plots don't really seem that similar in the slightest.

This movie has a nostalgic sort of vibe to it, more akin to something you might have seen in the 90's I think. I guess that makes sense since the dude who directed this is all over the place in terms of his film making. I wanted to like this one, but I just didn't love it. The actors try their best but this film has some poor plot management throughout, especially the longer it goes on. Just really, really strange behavior and ideas that aren't well explained or even at all in some cases. Like I can't get the motivations behind the main two villains at all. It would require going into plot heavy spoilers and I don't think anyone else is going to watch this, and I had that discussion with the only person that did already. But yeah, it's a shame because I think the characters and actors are pretty good actually but they're weighed down by a lot of nonsensical writing.

Watched Sophie Turner's new thriller Trust. Not great... sort of a home invasion style horror setup, at first there's promise. Turner plays a beloved actress, basically "America's daughter" who is well known for a (really awful looking) sitcom in the vein of really corny ones from earlier times. When her nudes and other images leak online from a hack, she decides to take a secluded break but various things happen that lead to her becoming forced to survive. The movie is at least competent up until a certain point, once she becomes locked in the room it all falls apart. She spends almost the entire film locked in this room, which is just an Air B&B so why is this place indestructible? The movie then goes all over the place... you've got the guys who want to rob her, the dude who installed cameras to peep on people that stay at the Air B&B and then her costar who sends a hitman to kill her for threatening his livelihood.

Just so all over the place and with strange plotholes that are difficult to ignore. Slow week for horror since the only other things that came out were the new Hellhouse film, which they excluded from our membership so I'll just wait for Shudder and something from Fathom Events called Primitive War which I wasn't going to pay for either.

I watched Get Away starring Nick Frost and it was okay I guess. It's a horror comedy about a family who goes to this isolated island in Sweden where they celebrate this cannibalization ritual their ancestors did, and the family is pretty aloof to it all. There's a pretty significant twist that changes the game on it, but it really just doesn't feel as funny as it ought to be. There's so many ridiculous red flags throughout the whole thing which should make them all want to run like hell that by the time the twist happens, it all makes sense. I dunno, not terribly funny.

But you know what's great? Brandon Christiansen who is most notable for his Shudder horror films on a shoe string budget that actually ends up being really good is coming out with a new movie! He seems to have a new one every year.

He did Still/Born, Z, and Puppet Man, and now he's doing Night of the Reaper!

https://youtu.be/cBB1KPtICUA?si=2WM9IirhewsnmAXI

Should probably end up coming out in October like his films usually do.

Push: This one is on Shudder and features a recent widow carrying the child of her deceased husband. She's a real estate agent and is still working up to within a month of her delivery, trying to sell a creepy old house that's been on the market for years. This is another "home invasion" sort of horror like Trust was, except this one is actually competent and likable. The drama here comes from the fact the protagonist is so far along pregnant that it interferes with her ability to fight back against the assailant, in fact she goes into labor during the movie (hence the name of the film). It's fairly good; it combines this Woman vs. Psychopath trope I've seen a few times with some vague overtones that there might be something supernatural at play after all.

The Other: Recently made free with a Prime membership, this tells the story of a barren couple that adopts a troubled, mute girl with a history of familial issues. Weird things begin happening once she's at the home, and once you get the reveal as to what's going on... I mean again, I think this movie is decent. I like a couple of the characters here and the actors do a decent job with what they're given. It isn't anything groundbreaking, this is the evil, unborn twin setup from movies like Malignant but I thought it was fairly competent and watchable.

We're heading off soon to see the opening night showing of The Toxic Avenger. I will say I've never been that big on Troma; it's okay. This was probably the best film of theirs that I've actually seen but for the most part their catalog feels very same-y and it just was never really my thing. Not to say I've ever "disliked" something I've seen from them, but nothing has really ever wowed me that great either.

The Toxic Avenger was pretty good, probably the best I've seen from Troma (probably pretty easily). I guess it probably helps to have the level of actors they did here, because everyone was great in their roles. Really stellar cast here. From a gore standpoint, it's what you expect from an Unrated film from Troma. But it's not the level of carnage you'd see in Terrifier, or if it is comparable it becomes not because the tone of the film is much more lighthearted and the conclusion much, much kinder than anything the Terrifier franchise would offer. It's a gory, fun, well-acted film with a lot of heart at the end of the day. I wish it could have performed better in terms of finances, but to be honest I feel like you have to be pretty entrenched in horror to have even heard of Troma or know this was a reboot film in the first place. And they barely marketed it from what I saw as an avid movie-goer in terms of trailer spots.

Last Rites has a middling critic score and a pretty decently high audience score, which is what I'd expect from the franchise. I want to be impressed by it (on Sunday), because the last film was the definition of mid and if this is really the end (lawl) I hope it'll go out with something more akin to the first films.

Edit: Apparently it's also blowing box office predix out of the water and will debut as the highest grossing horror film of the year. Genny works in a theater and reports they are getting absolutely hammered.

Boy, I sure do have opinions on The Conjuring: Last Rites! I'll start by saying I liked it, but that's about it. Just liked it. I'll go through what I liked first.

I enjoy the Warrens as characters, and I think the addition of Judy and her boyfriend was great too. They really help make you care about it.

There are also a lot of really good scares and clever ideas in this one. Plenty of parts I thought were done extremely well. It's a marked step up from The Devil Made Me Do It.

So, what's my problem? Spoilers ahoy!

They did NOTHING to make you care about that family at all. lol They just show them doing random family stuff and bad things happening, but there is maybe one little story beat in there and that's really it. Otherwise they are the most generic family they could have. What made the first two movies so strong were that you could care about the haunted family and they have some depth to them there. There is nothing to that here. It makes the scenes where they DO show the family feel like such a waste because why even bother if you're not going to make us care about them at all?

There is also one scene that made me laugh out loud with Annabelle. lol They throw Annabelle into this because it's Annabelle and everyone loves Annabelle and we need her in the last movie! It's so damn goofy and I couldn't help but laugh. I get this girl should HATE the Annabelle doll after Conjuring 1 and Annabelle Comes Home, but they barely really establish that a ton to justify having Annabelle be a major scare?

Popping off of that point, the Conjuring movies are strongest when they remain more... grounded? As grounded as haunting, ghosts, and stuff go? The stuff with Annabelle just goes waaaay above and beyond what fits in this universe.

And then they also don't really explain why they want Judy. Why does demon want Judy? The demon apparently did all of this to get Judy to come find it, even though it could still haunt her everywhere. And then the demon gets Judy and... just tries to kill her after possessing her to terrorize folks? Aight? What was the point? I'm good if the demon just wants to terrorize and kill people then that's fine, but it makes it seem like it NEEDS Judy while not doing anything to explain it.

And then the ending of this thing just sucks. Possessed three headed baby mirror doing sick spins and then grinding up on the walls doesn't do a whole lot for me. It's so corny and over the top and really just fails at everything it wants to do. And then the whole movie they're just like "Pretend it's not there. Pretend the demon doesn't exist and it'll go away." And then at the end they're like "Nah just don't be afraid." And so mom and daughter just scream and put their hand on the mirror and I guess don't show fear and the mirror demon is like "Ah shit, my one weakness: standing up to my goofy bullshit." And then it just gives up and goes away? OKAY? I GUESS THAT WORKS?

ALSO WHY NOT USE YOUR GHOSTS FOR BACK UP!? You got these actually menacing ghosts and stuff that do all this work for you, and then Tony opens up a door and they all disappear and don't come back. Like bro, just get axe fella to cleave them while they get on their bravery hack.

Like I said, I liked the movie, but it's got some serious issues. They already tease that there can be a spin off with three headed baby mirror, so who knows if this is actually the last one. If it's doing gangbusters right now at theaters and blowing away all expectations, they'll find a way to keep milking this. I dunno, this could have been and should have been a lot better.

But you got Michael Chaves making this one and his track record of films he's directed has only been La Llorona (bad), The Devil Made Me Do It (bad), and The Nun II (YOU GAVE THE NUN A SUPER SAIYAN POWER UP). This could have really benefitted from having a new director give it a whirl instead of guy who makes bad movies with a couple promising moments.

So that's my thoughts. A movie that could have been a whole hell of a lot better but wasn't. But I liked it well enough because the Warrens are great characters and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are fantastic, and I thought that Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy did good in this film too. Mostly carried by great performances.

If you're looking for something that will almost certainly join one of the lowest tiers you've got, this might be the one for you.

I didn't realize how many (probably terrible) movies were piling up on Tubi from this year. So many to choose from at this point, just a game of chance if you'll get something inoffensively mediocre or downright terrible. This one definitely didn't get us off on the right foot.

This is pretty cool! I've seen all of these except one (which I may as well watch next month!)

Quick n dirty reviews:

Terrified - Spanish horror film! It's actually pretty outstanding. It's shot in multiple points of view and tells a rather interesting and terrifying story!

Skinamark - COMPLETE ASS. A movie where the best thing is the trailer. A complete waste of time after the novelty of the filming style runs out. Just a nothing film.

Caveat - Awesome film! Shot with two people in a home where one woman has amnesia. Low budget but it does great.

The Mortuary Collection - Man, when I think Shudder this one doesn't even register for me and I never even watched it. I will next month!

Host - Incredible feat. It took things like Unfriended and made a Zoom horror so much better and more intriguing. So many interesting and clever filming techniques that makes this one work really well. A triumph of the pandemic.

The Dark and the Wicked - This one was really dark (yeah) and I thought it was great. A family on the farm house being terrorized by an evil spirit. It really surprised me at a lot of points.

Mad God - A gorgeous, beautiful, haunting claymation movie. The plot is secondary and that's fine, because watching this demented trip is worth it. Just know you're going for a visual masterpiece.

In a Violent Nature - An extremely clever and witty film, filmed from the point of view of a slasher villain. Gruesome, subversive, and fun, it's a must watch.

Late Night With the Devil - We probably all know this one. A late night talk show has a possessed girl that slowly takes over the filming and terrible things happen. It's outstanding and really just a creative idea.

I guess that after it was the highest box office opening for a horror movie of all time, this was bound to happen.

So thoughts on Last Rites:

It's definitely better than it's predecessor but that's not saying a lot since that movie was very mid, and easily the weakest of the entire universe outside of the first Annabelle I think (La Llorona doesn't count). This one... I'd probably rank it above those films, both Nuns and probably Annabelle Comes Home. It doesn't come close to the original 2 movies once again unfortunately, for a lot of the reasons I think are well highlighted in Biscuit's spoilers. It does feel like it's just missing a little something special, and despite it's length it feels like it leaves a lot of things not explored well enough. This is a very character driven movie, which is unfortunate since the only good characters are the Warren family. There's next to no attachment you can form with the other family and as a result, the things that happen to them aren't as impactful as they should have been.

It's still decent and worth watching I think, but I really wanted a return to form for this franchise. Even if it will continue, this is probably the end of these Warrens as we know them now and as one of the biggest franchises born this century this doesn't feel like the fitting sendoff it should be.

Ouija: A New Beginning: Speaking of franchises... yeah no, this isn't part of the Ouija franchise it's just someone pulling and Amityville trying to trick you into believing that. I knew this wasn't coming in for the record, but it is free on both Prime and Tubi for your viewing (dis)pleasure. Horrible acting from like half the cast, and just passable for the rest I think. The general story here is that a mother and her two daughters are constantly moving/running from... something. One of the girls finds a Ouija board at a yard sale and pretty lame things ensue. There's a plot twist near the end that makes you wonder why all this ghosty stuff is even really a part of the movie because it plays second fiddle to that plot point. It's stink.

They're making another Insidious for some reason. Lin Shaye confirmed for a lead along with a past version of herself. This franchise has got no more juice. Or at least, it's time to move on to another cast and new stories by now.

A24 is picking up movie and TV rights and Glen Powell would be attached to the TV show. I think he'll make a lovely Leatherface.

I personally liked the last Insidious a decent amount, but honestly the ones where Shaye plays a lead role are kinda the worst ones of the series, no offense to her or anything.

About to head off to The Long Walk, which has earned high praise from critics and audiences alike so I'm pretty hopeful for this one. I'm not sure what the best score a King adaption has received from RT critics, but this has to be a contender so far.
