The first title doesn't necessarily need to be a good game, but often is when this seems to occur. To me, I'd go with We Love Katamari and Binding of Isaac Rebirth. Games that take the original winning concept and just improve it in every way while still maintaining the same feel of the original while also making it feel fresh. GTA and the Saints Row franchise, if you count the third game as a sequel, rather than being strict that only the second game counts for your question. Maybe Elder Scrolls, depending on who you're asking and which game you're pointing to as the perfect "sequel", and with the same caveat as the above two. Halo 2 if you discount the ending. It's hard to really come up with answers to this question if you ignore franchise-churn games like fighting games and most sports games (with incremental changes and roster updates). Most games that are really great usually wind up having somewhat downer sequels (Horizon: Zero Dawn), or at least games that are better in some ways but worse in others (KotOR2). Nothing else really pops to mind immediately. I didn't know Day of the Tentacle was a sequel. Never played it either way. But I think I have it on Steam. I could see considering GTA, but I was more thinking of "Direct Sequels" as in the second game to an original work. GTA has so many iterations and so many people have varying opinions on what works and what doesn't. Even if they love the game as a whole, they'll often still have things to complain about. GTA5 did a lot of great things but its biggest issues are lack of interiors, over-reliance on microtransactions and cancelled single player DLC. I would fully agree that Saint's Row 2 is the superior title in the franchise and would consider it a perfect evolution from the first title. The series really jumped the shark with the third title and blew that shark up with a rocket launcher afterwards. Elder Scrolls? I haven't played anything prior to Morrowind, so I can't speak for those titles, but A LOT of people fault each of those later titles for something. Many people consider Morrwind the pinnacle of the franchise while others think it archaic. SR2 was probably the better game if you want something more to the GTA clone it started out as, or a more dramatic game with comedy elements, but I had far more fun with SR3 as a silly fun romp than I did SR2 (though I liked both). SR3 also feels like a more simplified, polished version of the game. It also does a much better job of integrating all the side mission activites into the game than SR2 does, where they're almost entirely disconnected beyond the fact that you need to seek them out yourself and do them to gain enough points to unlock story missions. So to each their own. I wouldn't necessarily call bullshit on anyone who preferred SR2 to SR3 though. Also, I get the impression that you disagree with most of my takes because you dislike me personally, which is why I usually take most of your posts with a massive grain of salt. You're kind of in the same boat as Helly and a couple other people here in that respect, where I don't really take much of what you say all that seriously because of it. It's honestly been a really long time since I've played THUG1, but I just really remember loving the story and the "open-ish" world where you could skate around and do different side missions in.
