ive 100%'d each of them 3 times i think. 1 and Miles stand head and shoulders above 2 in terms of writing imo. i like them all a lot though

Agreed. Fantastic narrative driven games.

I also found Ys 8 to have a really compelling narrative. You crash on an uninhabited island and have to slowly explore it, rescue the other survivors and uncover the island's secrets.

But if you mean western style rpgs, then I'd highly recommend The Witcher 3

Its important to point out the term immersive simulation refers to a specific style of game, Ultima Underworld being the classic example.

It sounds like TC is just looking for any kind of big/long game with an engaging story and lore.

These are retro-style adventure games:

If you want something more modern with a gripping story, Hades 2 is in early access. It's not narratively driven, but that's certainly the hook.
If you want something actually narratively driven and immersive, play The Outer Wilds. It doesn't sound like that's what you're going for, judging by the host of AAA games you've listed, but it's super deep and really draws you in. It does have a bit of a learning curve, but then it's an incredible experience.

Yakuza 0 was a game that drew me in. The characters are really cool and I enjoyed the plot. The main plot is taken seriously but the side content can be hilariously goofy and has a ton of side content if going for 100%. While I havent played it yet, Ive heard Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a good jumping on point too.

I'll second the Nier games, but I played the original Nier, not the Replicant upgrade.

The narrative is great, but also told in an interesting and unique way. It combines game mechanics into the narrative and works really well. Like WoG said, it's thought provoking and philosophical and all that. It doesn't really fall into anime tropes too much aside from the art style.

The combat in Autonoma is very solid. The original game was sorta janky, but I believe Replicant uses the newer system.

That said, I totally understand saying a game isn't your cup of tea, I do it all the time.

I'm not going to try to convince you, because I know sometimes people don't like that, but I'll say this - if you're familiar with the Mass Effect trilogy, V often feels more of "your character" than Shepard does, IMO, and the story has a lot of "human" feeling moments.

I also had some certain expectations of it, and it turned out to be a different game than I was anticipating.

Another suggestion would be Days Gone. Its not my cup of tea as I usually dislike post apocalyptic games and especially anything with mutants/infected/zombie type things but I would still suggest it to others.

I was initially really hopeful because of the gorgeous Pacific Northwest setting and it being a Sony Bend game. I thought if I couldnt get Syphon Filter Id at least get a great game. I loved the biker aspect of it and the main character but its not my type of story.

However many people love that type of stuff. Same with Last of Us. I love me some Uncharted. Legit one of the greatest series ever but Last of Us isnt for me even though its Naughty Dog. So if you havent played Days Gone you may want to consider it.

I loved Days Gone. The zombie horde system made for some really surprising and crazy moments and I wish we'd gotten a sequel so they could expand on that system.

its mostly just that im not into the genre, so i doubt its ability to keep hold of me. i think id have a lot of fun with the character creator tho. thats the biggest draw for me

im pretty much in the exact same boat as u here. i remember way back when uncharted 3 came out, it came with the last of us demo. i pretty much instantly knew it wasnt for me. gave the game proper a few tries but got bored each time

Days gone looks mostly uninteresting to me

ive been playing A Way Out with my husband. its pretty amateur-hour but its a fun game to play together

also Helldivers has been getting a lot of mileage out of me. i can just feel the burnout creeping in
