I can empathize with how difficult it must be to write a story with expectations being that high and with so many plot threads to continue.

....But come on. It's been 13 years. It's just not happening at this point, he got the GoT cash and ditched the books.

Martin's been open that his writing process is excessive editing. He writes out of order, then rewrites it, and then rewrites other rewrites. He's also got depression, and has had some disputes over some things with HBO that haven't been entirely public.

Not many. And Winds isn't done, so we don't know if it will end up being the official longest.

And MANY book series (aka multiple books telling a long story), have been completed in under 14 years.

I've seen trilogies and series take a very long time between volumes. There's some series I'm still waiting on to complete.

Mrtin is uncommonly transparent about his process and access. If you want a guy who hasn't actually done shit on a late book, Patrick Rothfuss is right there

Missing the point (I suspect deliberately) "whataboutism" other authors is not a valid defense.

That some authors take a long time doesn't mean Martin's fans can't have negative opinions about how long he's taking.

Some police officers are racist, doesn't mean I can't be mad if a cop pulls me over for being black

I know it is a bigger series but Martin gets shit on by every opportunity but at least he is actively involved in a lot of projects and writing other stuff. He seems to stay pretty busy even if it not the stuff I want him to be busy on.

Patrick Rothfuss is basically doing not a fucking thing, not completely but close enough and I feel like he doesn't get shit on enough. He talks about how much better of a writer he is now and yada yada and he has been one book away from finishing his series for the same time frame and it is really annoying me haha.

I have little doubt it would have been finished quite some time ago and possibly the seventh book as well if fans hadnt been calling him a piece of shit and whatever else for so many years. Whatever his reasons for slowing down nobody deserves the abuse this man has received from fans. At this point I dont blame him for his lack of enthusiasm to finish something he wont even be thanked for if he does.

That's not what LightSnake is saying. I don't think he's ever said or implied other people were being unreasonable for thinking it will never be released.

All he said was that he had thought Martin was probably genuinely working on it and might still put out the last book, and he got attacked for it. He wasn't calling other people stupid or delusional for having different opinions. LightSnake was the one who was insulted and called delusional for his opinions.

There's no 'defense' needed, because nobody's done anything wrong here. Being disappointed is valid. Wanting the book is valid. Anger is just being entitled, because you are not owed anything by the author. Anger implies he owes you a duty and is failing to deliver on an obligation.

I haven't followed this at all, so what's his major issue with finishing it?

On the one side he's got a series with over a dozen character perspectives (with literal hundreds of named characters and families), history spanning multiple continents and millenia with mysteries of the world that have lasted just as long all across a mythos that he has to keep consistent and wrap up neatly in two books and maybe a spinoff or two. He needs to do so without writing himself into a corner and keeping in mind what people hated about the ending to the HBO show.

On the other hand, he needs to juggle being a producer for all these HBO shows and ensuring they meet his vision (not going well if House of the Dragon is anything to go off of)

And to add absolute lunacy to the mix, fans have speculated that Bran's powers involve a form of time travel and that he has found a way to manipulate events for anywhere between a few decades to up to the 8000 years since the wall has been built. An absolute monumental task if you take in the scope of the plot and worldbuilding if you want to avoid plot holes.
