I grew up in the late 90s through the 00s.

CDs was my primary method.

Primarily from a combo of my dads physical collection, the radio, and MTV until I was old enough that I started to build my own physical collection. My dad would record his music onto blank tapes for me to listen to in my room.

A lot of radio listening in my room and people that are younger dont appreciate how influential and how big MTV really was when it started and was in its prime. Especially for a kid like me in the Midwest in the middle of cornfields and cow pastures who could basically only hear Rock and country on the radio.

To get exposed to headbangers ball, 120 minutes, Yo MTV raps and so much more was a big thing. So yeah it was a huge part of my life that overtook the radio.

If we're counting "consume" as music I had direct control over then that was mostly on portable CD players. In the car though, it was either cassettes my mom played or the radio.

Radio and casettes. I had a walkman as a kid but I never did own one of those portable cd players that was popular in my teenage years.

Also MTV. Definitely MTV. MTV was to teens in the 80s and 90s what adult swim was to teens in the 2000s.

There was no primary method.

Computer, cd player/walkman, car using cassettes and/or cds, stereo in my room, stereo in the living room area were all equally used. CDs might have a 1% lead because downloaded stuff all went there.

I lived through different phases.

As a kid I had a 45 record player that played children's storybook records and my mom's old music. Later I got a Walkman, boom box, and cassettes. Then CDs.

I think CDs wins since I had more money at that point.

A combination of CDs, MTV (in the morning before school, I think that block was called Wake Up or Video Wake Up) and garbage-quality downloaded MP3s.

For a while I used my PSP as a music player and then upgraded to a 5th-gen iPod. In 2008 I got an iPhone 3G and from that point on I've used my phones as music players. The only time I deviated from that was when someone at an old job of mine gave me a Sandisk Clip player which I used for a few weeks.

A mix of radio, cassette, and CDs. Then MP3 came out. I was born in 88, so I didnt hear many records.

We always listened to music in the car. My parents randomly had home audio systems and I listened to portable cd players a lot. Then I started listening to music on the computer with headphones.

Vinyl

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of Sunday afternoons. Sitting in front of the fireplace, watching football, arguing with my brother about whose turn it was with the GameBoy, and listening to my dad jamming out on harmonica to Blues Traveler and Pink Floyd and The Beatles...

ugh I'm like waffling back and forth between CDs and digital. I started getting CDs in like... 1998 or 1999, but started using digital outlets in like... 2003 or 2004. So there's a similar amount of time there, and even for some time in high school I was using the radio on this cool CD player my mom bought me... I would just put that on and listen until like 2 AM every night.
