this is genuinely one of the most bizarre topics ive ever seen here

im in my 20s and saying lets go has been a common phrase in every sporting culture ive literally ever been a part of, and older folks say it too.

Like im genuinely wondering how people think this is a new concept or gen Z slang. Have yall seriously never heard LETS GO METS?

The term "Let's go" meaning "It's time to leave" has been around forever, and sports fans using it as a chant has been around for decades ("Lets Go Mets!"), but kids and athletes using it originates from the video in post #9 gaining meme popularity over the last few years.
That video is most definitely not the origin of the phrase.

They're expressing approval regarding how the current events have transpired and are indicating that, circumstances permitting, they would like said events to continue.

This, as hilarious as this sounds it's pretty damn accurate. In fact, I primarily hear this phrase used with my friends who love watching sports like when a team makes a touchdown and they go "Let's Fucking Go!" or "Let's go, Babyyyyyyy!"

I don't even hear this phrase used by my niece and nephews and they're in the gen z and younger range.

You know what, I hear this phrase a lot here in So Cal in fact. My Manager just used the phrase when I gave him the good news, and he's like 56 years old. It might just be a regional thing.

That's literally what I said.

The video obviously isn't the origin, considering "Let's go" as a phrase dates as far back a Shakespeare, but it's resurgence can partially be attributed to the meme

I love sports, and have had season tickets to a number of sports teams my whole life.

Gen Z is not saying this like you would at a baseball or football game. They say it when they find out there is pizza in the kitchen and scream LETS GOOOOOO while they go get it.

There is obviously nothing wrong with that, but it is also pretty different from how it is used during a sporting event. We old folks werent saying it when something cool or fun happened in our daily lives-that is the change.

Exactly!

I have two teen sons, the phrase is used constantly and at high volume when their friends are hanging out at our house, and that is exactly how they use it. It is kind of fun. But it definitely was not something my generation was doing outside of watching a sporting event.

Yeah, and even then chanting Lets go <team> was rallying for a good thing to happen, not celebrating it afterward.

Okay, but there are several people in here saying theyve never heard it used ever in any context.

Its also really not much different. You say lets go in sports when something you like happens. Theyre saying it outside of sports when something they like happens. I dont understand how theres a difference.

This isn't the kind of usage that the OP (or anyone else in the thread) is talking about.

I've been to Hawaii sporting events before where "LET'S GO BOWS" was a typical rallying cry. You know when it was generally used? When they were falling behind, and needed to do something to catch up. Not after they'd just scored or won the game.

You know, this topic reminds me when Life is Strange got dragged to the mud for the word "hella" being the "how do you do fellow kids" word...when in reality almost all of my cousins from Seattle use the word "hella" a lot in their usage. Not one of them even knows what Life is Strange is, which goes to show a lot of these phrases and words can simply just be a regional thing. I remember meeting my friend in Texas and when I told him "what's up" (which is normally just a casual way in saying "hi") and instead of saying "what's up" back to me, he proceeded to tell he what went on his day up till now.

You see, Americans have a very limited number of fucks to give. They're so precious that we have to keep them stored in the local fuck bank for fear of losing them.

So when someone says, "Let's go," like that or, more accurately, the full uncensored phrase of, "Let's fucking go," it means that an activity has crossed the threshold where we've deemed it worth giving a fuck over. Now, because our fucks are stored in the fuck bank, we have to go down there and retrieve one so that it can be appropriately given.

This later developed into other phrases. "It's so over," means that the trip to the fuck bank has been cut short and is now over, while, "We're so back," means that we're back at the fuck bank to withdraw again. Of course, both phrases also have the uncensored version with "fucking" in them.

This aside inspired by post #2.
Lol accurate

I use let's go in competitive settings. So my own sports. Watching sports. Video game multiplayer. Etc.

I understand the Gen z way it's used, and I think it's mostly funny when not over used. All about timing, as most things are.

Unless you're suggesting that that user happened to know the first person to ever use it that way, that suggests it falls under "popular use" much more than "first use."

And that's my experience, as well. The usage of it has certainly ramped up over time, but I remember people using it this way for a long time.
