On one hand they are a tradition (at least in America, not sure about other countries), they usually look good, and they are a commonly worn accessory

On the other hand they are usually quite expensive and don't really do anything

What do you think?

If the wife needs it then it's worth it.

Mine did not, she wanted no ring because she's in healthcare and would have to keep taking it off or losing it anyways.

My wife and I can't even wear our rings at work, as a result we never wear them.

Being married saved me a ton of money on taxes.

Sorta this. If you marry for finical reasons it can be worth it but in general I've never cared for marriage.

Making your fianc feel pretty and special is important.

However this is a result of a debeers marketing campaign to sell diamonds.

If you don't like engagement rings you need to find a similar way to make them feel special.

Ehm... probably not. I guess if the couple wants them, then go for it.

They are a waste of money, but if it is the price I have to pay to spend the rest of my life with the girl of my dreams, I guess I would pay it. In the grand scheme of life, several thousand dollars is not a lot.

Personally, I'd consider it a waste of money because I'd have no use for one.

If you blow a ton of money on one so that you can propose with it, yes.

If you go with your S/O to pick one out after proposing so that you can find one you both like for a reasonable price, then yes, also still kind of a waste of money, but considerably less so. Especially since in my case all the rings I really liked were not ones she was overly interested in. So if I'd bought it alone she would've had to wear a ring she didn't much care for for a year and a half.

Jewelry did not have value until the early 1930's. Diamonds are not rare. They aren't difficult to farm with current technology.

Hold on we always had jewelry.

You're right about diamonds not being terribly valuable, but jewelry was always used to make people feel more special and valuable.

It really depends on your circumstances. There were lots of practical advantages to me getting married.

Is there anyone who insist that diamonds must be mined? I know there were some people like that 5 years ago but they're not a thing anymore right?

diamonds can only be found deep underground :)
