Honestly, although I loved it back in the day, I'll admit that further context added by later games sort of deflates most of its crazy third act's impact.

I think the added real world context from the intervening years more than makes up for that.

Yeah MGS2 to me was like a Russian doll where it kind of just got better and better the more I delved in

I played it before MGS1, so no Tanker first time through. Still thought it was the best game I'd ever played before I even got to fission mailed and all that insanity
Then I finished it a dozen times including the Tanker section
Then it became the only game I beat on every difficulty setting (to this day I've only done that with like two other games) and it still ruled
Then I played MGS1 and filled in some of the gaps in the story
Then I played Substance and played the VR missions and saw just how like, strong its gameplay actually is all-round
Then I understood that the whole thing was a commentary on sequels in general
Then social media happened and its story became weirdly prescient

Like it started as the best game I'd ever played, and after that it got really good. It's all gravy to me.

I remember getting this when it came out. Had no idea we had to wait 4 months in the UK though.

Spending over 2 decades only getting more relevant when the game had to be delayed to make it less evocative of 9/11 is downright insane.

Thinking game comes to mind primarily for how prescient it has been.

It has been 23 years exactly since MGS2 released.

Which means it's closer to the Carter administration than the present day.

I guess I have to agree with this, actually. MGS4 is so flawed, but I think I'd still rather replay it than 2.

Hmm. 3 >= 5 > 4 >= 2 > 1

Yup the math doesn't lie, you are technically correct.

Honestly those could all just be equal signs. Ranking these games is tough. They're all the best.

One of the most audacious big budget games ever made and my favourite MGS. I have so much nostalgia for it, especially the Tanker section because it was the demo (played it 50 times). I did always wish we got a version with an expanded Big Shell section (with more sneaking areas on the second strut), but alas it wasn't to be.

One of the greatest achievements in video game history. I was playing this in front of my exgf and she was basically uninterested until the madness started happening then she was locked in trying to figure it out and was like "wait a minute this was made WHEN?"

I remember walking into a Gamestop in like 04-05 and seeing they had an entire shelf of about 50 copies of this all being sold for 3 bucks. That's when I bought it and beat it. Still the only MGS I ever beat and boy was it a great game.

Heck I was so hype about the demo in Zone of the Enders....that was a great demo too.
The fact that Snake wasn't the main guy in it never bothered me like so many others back then.

And finally, I honestly don't remember much of the story lol. Maybe I'll look it up to refresh myself.

#1 best video game story, I'd say. Too bad it requires playing MGS1 for the full impact, IMO.
