Are they trying to legalize rape and sexual assault? Because that's what all this would lead to and just downright vile and disgusting. I feel so bad for all women in this country.

besides what TC said, I also fear a lot of murders of women, when they get pregnant and the father doesn't want to deal with a baby and knows they can't get an abortion.

People could also just get a divorce instead of murdering their partner, but they don't always.

Murder is the leading cause of death for pregnant women.

Not specifically women, but Idaho had a bill ready that may keep children from having those kits used on them in the hospitals unless parents or guardians approve.

Can we get this stickied to the front page? That guy saying it was an "insane fear" is gonna have some surprises coming down the road next 4 years.

The overall strategy seems to be moreso to put pressure on women by stripping their rights/overall making their lives more difficult so they need to be in a marriage without much power to leave it once theyve entered it. So while not exactly rape...wait, no. That definitely sounds like rape to me.

Marital rape has only been outlawed in the entire US since 1993, and that was the end of 20+ years of changing laws.

Up to 1970, women couldn't, by legal definition, be raped by their husbands, because it was considered the man's right.

You don't have to make rape legal. You just have to make the reporting and prosecuting of rape so complicated and onerous for the women that they won't bother.

Our society will never ever legalize rape per se, because it is a crime we prosecute based on social status.

A rich white man who rapes a woman, is generally viewed as not having done anything wrong and should not face even the consequence of being denied a high powered job (Donald Trump, Brett Kavanaugh)

A poor black man who 'rapes' a woman (especially a white woman), is generally viewed as needing the death penalty.... even if there is physical evidence proving he's innocent (Central Park 5).

We're not getting rid of rape because it doesn't apply to the men in power and it can be used to destroy poor minorities even when they don't do it.

FTR: I am not implying that poor or minority men don't deserve harsh punishments for rape if they actually did it, but rather how we rich and powerful white men who rape women can have no problem using the justice system to incarcerate poor black men who do not.

Luckily my wife and I have a stockpile of abortion pills in case her birth control fails.

I think minority women will experience and insanely high uptick in sexual assault because they are more likely to be waved off by the system. Latina women could be threatened with deportation if they don't have sex for example. Black women will be hurt a lot by this new era as well.

I don't think they are trying to legalize rape, but rather the results after rape. As for the dictatorship and those that think it couldn't happen, remember that Russia used to have other presidents. No one under 30 is going to remember Boris Yeltzin, or Dmitry Medvedev, though to be blunt I don't remember Dmitry Medvedev, and I'm 38. This dictatorship is a new thing for Russia. Sure they have a so called "Election" but there's no way in hell Putin is popular enough to pull what was it? 78% of his population? We can't even get 5/5 dentists to agree and this man is pulling nearly 80% of the population to his side? Ridiculous.

I predict that there will not be such a grand federal gesture as to legalize rape or sexual assault. It's a logistical mess to even attempt and Republicans are too lazy for that.

States I'm not as confident on, but again, it's a mess to try to reverse settled law (and this is law, not a court decision).

What is far more likely is that they will instead do as they've always done: apply existing law on a case-by-case basis in a way that benefits them, using every loophole available.

As was mentioned, POC, and likely LGBTQ+ people as well, will find themselves vastly over-affected by this, whereas we'll be back in the days of individual judges not wanting to ruin a promising young white boy's future over "one little mistake".
