I know a couple of Republican gamer friends who told me they're going to build their new PCs now before new tariffs go in. I've also heard people praying the next Nintendo console gets released before tariffs go in.

How much were their Christmas bonuses? Being a small company likely just A few hundred dollars at best. I doubt that would have made a dent in any of their business expanses. So either their employers lied to avoid paying them or this story is fake.

Its impossible to know how much Christmas bonuses were for company XYZ without knowing their financials. Ive worked for large companies that didnt give out bonuses at all. Ive worked for small companies with ~150 employees that gave out large bonuses to the tune of thousands of dollars. That same company paid me a $35,000 bonus as part of a company buyout and they did so just because the CEO wanted to do that for me. I was expecting to get nothing.

My current job is a very large company and pays multiple bonuses in a few different ways.

I sort of just assumed it was likely a blue collar company of sorts if they were that concerned about tariffs. And for most such jobs any bonus just near 1k is almost unheard of. At least from my exp.

Let alone anything close to yours. Which is life changing money in my income bracket.

That company is bullshitting them. If they can afford 3 years of inventory they can afford the bonus.

Let's see a bonus or keeping them on for 3 years under tariffs hmm

Companies meticulously plan their financials. If an increased expense happens unexpectedly or can be predicted, bonuses are the first thing that will get cut to pay for it.

They colloquially call it the color of money. They have a bucket of money for purpose X, a bucket of money for purpose Y, and a bucket of money for purpose Z.

If bucket Z is the bonus payout and bucket Y needs more money, theyre going to pull from bucket Z first.

One of the frustrations I had at my last job is that I was the only network engineer. It was cool at first when the company was small. They had 3 buildings in Austin, TX and about 350 employees. The network was super easy to manage by myself. A couple times per week I would drive from the corporate office to the two other locations to put eyes on things and check on small things and needs of the business.

By the time 2019 rolled around, the company had expanded massively. 5 buildings in Austin, one in Dallas, one in Charleston, SC, one in Canada, one in China, one in Chicago, one in Mexico, etc. Over 1000 employees. I was still the only network engineer and they refused to hire any more to help. i was constantly working 60 to 80 hour weeks trying to keep up with everything.

At every company meeting, they would brag about surpassing their revenue expectations. Since they werent going to slow down their expansion plans and didnt want to hire anyone to help me, I asked for a big raise since I couldnt disconnect from work.

Could they afford it? Absolutely. However, they didnt have much money in the bucket for employee salaries beyond what they had already planned for. So, they just gave me a much smaller raise than I wanted.

So I left.

In the years since, they had a huge recall that cost them millions of dollars. No one got a bonus that year. Could they have afforded to pay bonuses AND deal with the millions lost in the recall? Yeah, but thats not how it works when the money in the pot is separated out into different buckets or colors.
