No, no can't say I do.

Even if I very mildly miss the facade/thin veneer conservatives used to put on of about caring about being the party of small government, can't say I've ever actually missed W.

Not at all.

IMO the GOP was absolutely certain to end democracy in the US by 2050 or so just by keeping on with the Bush/Cheney game plan of creeping fascism with enough deniability to keep the mainstream media and most of the population blind to the threat.

Then Trump happened, which is very double edged. We could get GOP fascism in the next week, but it's now possible for this shit to be confronted and for it to lose.

If we end up with a Republican president in 2028 or later who isn't Trump, that person will most likely be worse than Trump (even though that's literally unthinkable now).

Bush's policies and attitudes really did set the groundwork for MAGA - the weaponization of "patriotism" as being a violent, jingoistic, and bigoted person really started in the leadup to the Iraq War. MAGA just took that and turned it on immigrants and gays (other subgroups that Bush's GOP also shit on).

That said, the one time I did miss George W. Bush was during the onset and peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. As flawed a president as Bush was, the one area in which he was eminently qualified and capable was public health. Bush read about the 1918 flu pandemic and, rightfully so, started shitting himself at the thought of another one happening. Bush's administration set up a lot of important infrastructure and ideas that the Trump administration ended up defunding and disregarding. Bush being president during COVID-19 would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives since he wouldn't have politicized the pandemic and Republicans would have followed common sense medical advice.

The GOP has always kind of been a bit of a cult in those ways, but at least under Bush it wasn't a literal death cult

But what happens if four hundred thousand points of weight suddenly crashes into the buildings damaging their structural integrity? That's not exactly something the people who built the towers were planning for.

Yes it was terrorists.

There are legitimate things to blame on W. Like going after the wrong country and claiming they had WMDs when they didn't but it was planes that took down the towers.

I'd also like to point out that in late 2007 Bush made a speech condemning nationalism and nativism. This was after he noticed the rise in these things even back then (actually it was first noticeable in 2005 via right wing backlash to his attempts at immigration reforms.) He (and the GOP, as it was in those days) also heavily condemned the Trumpian nationalism/xenophobia/other crap of Pat Buchanan back in 2000. The GOP sure was a lot different before the Tea Party took power...

--His handling of Haitian refugees in Gitmo (his very first presidential scandal)
--Firing Bush Sr's FDA commissioner who opposed advertising prescription drugs, and replacing him with an FDA commissioner who did
--The parts of NAFTA dealing with overseas trade
--Repeal of Glass Steagall (the fact that Congress had a veto-proof majority is completely irrelevant when the president himself voices support for the bill.)

I don't know. As bad as Buchanan was, January 6 makes Trump the single individual in the history of America who has done the most damage to the country.

The GOP sure was a lot different before the Tea Party took power...

That's true, but the problem is that a lot of that nationalism and nativism is just the GOP with their masks off. The GOP's emphasis on "family values" was really just their way of disenfranchising Black people and promoting segregation by another means. Bush himself might not have overtly bought into white nationalism and nativism, but the GOP has been riding the white nationalism and nativism train since the 1970s - the whole reason the GOP adopted "family values" was as a way to incorporate the Dixiecrat policy platform as per the Southern Strategy, and as such, Bush, even though he wasn't the architect of it, certainly bears responsibility for it to an extent.

Trump was not some takeover of the GOP. Trump is literally what the GOP has been fighting for for *decades* - they have been fighting for a conservative white ethnostate for decades, just by another name.
