Also, can I have a 40 year old "old man" moment?

I lament the continuing loss of the clear ace. Like, look at Detroit here tossing out Skubal and being like, "This is our ace. He is fucking fantastic and unless YOU get to him? He is throwing at least 7 innings"

Fucking Cleveland? They didn't even give up a run yet and they were already going to the pen in the 4th inning. Like, WTF. More and more teams are just going, "LOL, starter going more than 5? What are you, a fucking idiot?"

I know there are probably plenty of analytics nerds that are gonna roast the fuck out of me for this opinion and that it is more about pitchers moving into being all about power strikeout pitchers so they're tossing like 100 pitches into the 5th inning... but isn't Skubal just proving that maybe the tried and true ace going 7-8 innings and pitching often to contact still is probably the IDEAL?

in terms of watchability you absolutely have a point here. there definitely is more intrigue and excitement in watching a starting pitcher navigate a lineup multiple times, seeing what adjustments can be made. there's a reason no one gives a shit about bullpen no-hitters after all. but in terms of increasing your odds of winning one of the pushes analytics has brought to the table in the last 5 years is the emphasis on third time through the order, basically not letting hitters see your pitcher a third time in a game. we saw it today, Skubal was left in there to face the lineup a 3rd time and they probably lost the series because of it.

the unfortunate thing is that a lot of the advancements brought about in baseball by analytics and smart optimization have made the product less interesting from a spectator point of view. ie less balls in play, less hits due to crazy advancements in defensive positioning, more bullpen games, less stolen bases

^why leave an ineffective starter in when the very important playoff game is still within relative reach?

These games are too important to mortgage on "pride" and "tradition." If the dude isn't doing his job then get him the hell out of there and let someone who can get outs do it.

If this were like April or May, yeah, let them work though it but in the postseason? Do your job or sit. I don't understand why that's remotely contentious.

Eventually it's gonna tire out your dugout if you just start throwing them out in the 2nd or 3rd inning. I mean, I get it, you gotta empty the tank to win, analytics, etc. etc. If you tire out your dugout in games 1 and 2, you literally have nothing left for the rest of the series.

By dugout, do you mean the bullpen?

Most pitchers that regularly come out of the bullpen are capable of pitching 3-4 times a week. It's not nearly the issue that you seem to think it is.

The only issue that it poses in the playoffs are when teams convert their 4th and 5th starters to the bullpen. Those guys aren't going to be used as frequently because they're not conditioned for it. Regular relievers though, yeah, they're good. Also, you seem to presume that every game is going to have the starter removed early. If a guy is doing what he's expected to and only gives up like a lone early run and then proceeds to lock in, he's not coming out until he's tired. That still holds true.

I don't think it's some great conspiracy of analytics that if a starter is getting knocked around in the 3rd inning of the LCS, yanking him before it gets worse is the better option for the team if they want to come back and win it.

knack is a young guy (well actually not really but he is a rookie), i don't think they were gonna leave him in there very long regardless. flaherty went 7 strong in game 1 so they didn't really use any major arms, and the playoffs have more off days so you can be more aggressive with deploying your bullpen

Indeed lol

I don't think I'll ever know a more dramatic entity than former A's/Cards closer Jason Isringhausen though. He just didn't believe in clean innings but 9.5/10 times, he got out of it. "High wire act" was an understatement, and it used to drive my friends insane lol (couldn't see the Royals in college, so I watched a fair number of Cards games).

As a Cards fan, he's not even the most dramatic Cards closer I've watched. I used to call Trevor Rosenthal "Trevor Cholesterol" because he would raise my dad's blood pressure like no other with his shaky outings.

Guards will probably win one or two in Cleveland. But they will absolutely not win twice in the Bronx, so they'd need all three Cleveland wins. If the Yankees win a single game in Cleveland, it's over
