If even a single debate question was unexpected they might have some semblance of a point, but they covered only the most obvious topics.

Anyone with an ounce of political savvy would have predicted those topics. None of them were a surprise. It's an average Presidential debate. They also at times asked each candidate to respond to something the other said, which could not have been prepped unless everyone was in on it together.

So Trump wants to eliminate taxes for overtime work, which seems impossible.

Then there's the fact his allies want to eliminate overtime through Project 2025 (which he's said he doesn't agree with, but it's troubling that the idea exists).

One of the worst parts about Trump is that even after he's gone, the way he's changed social norms will linger for decades, at minimum. GOP politicians being crazy assholes is normalized now, and that behavior also trickles down to the populace.

The only way it starts to go away is if there's some miracle in regards to rejection by then and he loses Texas and Florida.

And it has to be both.

My primary hope is that this whole debacle with Trump wakes up people and they start rejecting hard right wing nonsense for a good period of time after this. Kind of like how your body becomes more resistant to a virus after you clear it out. I hope because of how incredibly disgusting the Trump campaign has been it results in a surge of new politically motivated opposition that carries momentum for some time.

...But it is merely a hope.

It is going to take awhile to fix things...if they are even fixable at all.

There is still a chance we've poisoned ourselves beyond repair.

There is no one left in power in the Republican party to go "Trump was a loser all those things he told you were lies".

They dont have any out left to restore sanity in the immediate future.

Staying in power is going to mean keeping up the facade.

The issue is that Republicans have been crazy assholes for half a century or more (and before that there were still crazy assholes, they just weren't all Republicans). All Trump really did was normalize being 20-30% more open about it. We might be able to push back on that 20-30% (if we even want to? I'm not convinced it's worse than the alternative) but I don't know how we repair the actual damage without, like, a magic lamp.

Their craziness has bled into the real world.

They always had a bunch of shitty beliefs, but for the most part they were in the background or fighting a losing battle.

Now you come across fanatical nutjobs in day to day life. Its unavoidable. They have built a cult.

Life was much preferable when they had to pretend they werent evil. But now they've figured out a method to get people to just embrace it.

Pretty much yeah. I think in a potential Hillary Wins timeline, the GOP extremism never becomes as normalized as it is now. Even if she somehow bombed her term and a Republican got elected right after, they wouldn't have nominated someone as crazy Trump after he lost the first time.

It might not have if he had stuck it out and kept going instead of ending his campaign. Also, he was a Democrat and there was a very different standard for Democrats and Republicans, even 20 years ago.

I'm not yet convinced that our immediate future is beyond saving, personally. Republicans for my entire life have been 100% about power and winning. Those who can provide both have been rocketed to party-wide influence and those who can't offer either are banished to political irrelevance.

If Trump loses to Kamala, he'll have lost twice in a row. His age means he's realistically not getting another chance after this, and his cult will basically have the head of the serpent cut off whenever he kicks the bucket. Literally nobody else has come even close to harnessing the power of this ~30% of the populace like Trump can, and I'm not convinced anyone else will immediately be capable of filling that void. Add to this that the only person who's good enough at the game to actually steer the party strategically (Mitch) likely literally has dementia at this point. So you're going to see a rabid MAGA party with no direction fielding the same wretched, unelectable types of candidates that progressively lose them power in all branches.

No power, no victory. The party either pivots back to some semblance of sanity and stays relevant or they just keep losing until Democrats eventually (but still very slowly because they're still awful at wielding power) pass enough voting rights protections, Supreme Court oversight and legislative reform that the realistic doors back to winning with this style of politicking all close completely.

Of course, this is all assuming Kamala does win. I'm pretty sure our government is actually just fucked for at least most of the remainder of our lives if Trump gets another full term.

The part that bothers me is that the cult has embraced Trump as essentially a sports fandom. His death would be best to stop it but as long as hes alive he can basically lead the cult however he wants. His crowd is going to back him no matter what. There are so many people now interested in politics in a way that isn't sane in the slightest.

Our government isn't really setup to fix anything, especially when one party is entirely invested in making sure nothing happens.

A rabid MAGA party is still dangerous. Nothing ends. Our populace on both sides isn't educated or interested enough to know why anything happens. Kamala Harris isn't going to be some magical fix and we will end up paying for it in the polls in one form or another.

The media isn't suddenly going to shift to pointing out Trump is a fucking lunatic.

It is unfortunate but we don't grab enough power even with a Trump loss. It is still preferable. But we are very deep in a hole. It is going to be a continued cycle of crazy MAGA idiots vs the rest of the mostly apathetic populace.

The issue is that it's much easier to dismantle government than build it. One Dem term will nudge the country in the right direction. One GOP term probably like, ends democracy. Losing isn't an option anymore. Not gonna be easy to keep winning for decades straight!

I feel like nostalgia for the '80s and MAYBE the '00s is basically the only thing keeping MAGA extremism alive for the moment, and those are both likely to die down as time passes. If Harris wins this election, the future looks much brighter for Democrats than for Republicans.

A huge part of it is cultural disconnect. People who are raised with a particular ideology do not always think critically about politics. Then, people cannot admit their worldview is wrong - which means they will excuse anything their party does and accept all criticism of the other.

My experience is that liberals tend to think more critically about their own parties and that culturally we have become more liberal, but there is a bulwark of young people who are not conservative due to nostalgia - it's due to tribalism.

For younger people (men in particular) I wonder how big the impact of the toxic "manosphere" stuff is in radicalizing - I think you see it as the gender gap among young people has been growing.
