that's really horrible

honestly this is one of the reasons i don't want to wear a watch. other than the fact that i think they're outdated and useless tech, having an expensive watch just screams "rob me". i don't know if the fashion statement is worth it. but i guess if it isn't a watch, then it's just something else.

I feel like his agent or management parties failed him there.

The stores that may still be standing create targets out of their customers. I know some SF people like "no that place is perfectly safe". There's literally not a safe place in downtown SF unless you're visibly poor as fuck and worth nobody's time to rob. It's not that it's a GTA server like the media sometimes tries to make out, but there's an entirely realistic expectation something can happen. There's nothing suggesting you're safe. I avoid going, which is a nagging thought because I used to be in downtown a lot as a kid, completely worry-free.

I was actually sitting in union square park one block down when this happened. I had to take a detour on my way to the gym because they had the road blocked off.

I know SF gets a bad rap for crime, but this was 330 pm on a Saturday in the most populated portion of the city, a tourist destination, and typically one of the safest time/place combinations you could be.

Its where all the department stores are, and the star of the cable car.

Eh, Ive lived here for 14 years. The apocalyptic nature of what the news depicts is completely on the button.

I live in a building across next to two performance art theaters, two five star restraunts, several 4/5 star hotels, about a dozen art galleries, a handful swanky bars, and the campus for Next Door which up until Covid was the Reddit HQ. In 2019, this was a legitimate luxury area. It was the liadion between Nob Hill/Union Squarenow its considered the Tenderloin. Its ironically called the tender nob because all the swanky businesses are still there, its just covered in poo, needles, and lawlessness.

Once Covid hit, the city did nothing to accommodate the homeless community. Eventually they opened several abandoned SROs, turned on the electricity and had the police round up and drop them off in what was essentially a series of abandoned buildings. Then when they still needed more space, they forced all the hotels (which were shut down due to covid) to reopen as homeless shelterslike famous 5 star hotels.

During Covid I would hear non-stop screaming from the homeless, from sundown to sunrise. It eventually became white noise.

Now here is the thing. Despite the lawlessness, and apocalyptic nature of SFits still reletivly safe. We really dont have that much violent crime. The homeless are mostly harmless.

Getting shot in the chest by a teenager on a Saturday Afternoon (in a nice tourist area no less) is super rare! The fact that it happened to a celebrity is a coincidence thats going to come with a typhoon of media coveragebut in all my years in SF Ive legit never seen any violent crime. Unless Im blanking.

This is kind of silly because it could literally apply to every town in American, it's so vague.

Crazy that this happened, hopefully the 9ers have a good season despite this shit. I am very glad he wasn't killed from this shit, it seems he tried to fight the robber off. He probably should have just given him his fucking watch, a human life is not worth one expensive watch.

I don't give a shit if it's a $50k watch, if you are the type to fight off a armed robber to protect something like that you are crazy. Especially for a NFL player who has the potential to make over $100 million in his career.

This is basically like Elon Musk dying in a confrontation, because some jackass tried to steal a painting of his worth $10 million.

oh yeah, I was just saying why someone might shoot someone else over a watch.

trying to fight an armed robber for the gun is almost always the wrong decision.

yeah, it's also really sad that i've had things taken from me since forever in my life. whether forcefully, or unknowingly, scammed, or even through broken friendship. the one thing i've learned is that people want things and some of them are actually willing to do almost fucking anything to get it.

so i fail to see the point of an expensive watch if all it's going to do is make people say "ohhh he has a lot of money" while a few ballsy ones are "oh that'll be mine in a few minutes". doesn't seem worth it to me.

Well you gotta keep in mind anyone that does armed robbery as a career 9 times out of 10 is a desperate person. Shit, when you factor in jail time, planning, and things like that the metrics say most criminals make roughly minimum wage if you factor it all together.

Sure the top 5% of criminals can make insane bank, but they typically are extremely good at what they do. They also typically target far more valuable things like say $10 million diamonds or something like that where one score can be huge even when dealing with a broker to get rid of it.

Some random lugging around a gun planning on trying to rob people is either crazy or desperate they need that watch a hell of a lot more than the guy that bought it. I am not condoning robbery but a lot of people can't even understand the thought process of these people. You also notice that the super rich people typically don't make themselves more of a target, Bill Gates could walk around dressed in millions worth of jewelry and not even care much, but he wears normal clothes that might be nicer than what the average guy buys but we aren't talking like Armani suits or some shit.

Already a criminal is incentivized to grab a guy like Bill Gates to hold him for ransom or something, the last they want is to make it even more appealing.

the top 5% criminals aren't doing armed robbery. they're corporate criminals who are relying on their offshore bank accounts in tax havens so they can just run away even after they get found out.

Well they also are breaking into things and stealing shit that way cat burglars, and what not. But yeah my point was the guy walking around with a gun mugging people is not a top criminal at all. He's typically not very bright if he was he would have found other ways to make money, either that or mental or drug issues have led his life down that path.

But yes the top criminals are almost all white collar guys that steal things electronically, though drug lords can get up there also Pablo Escobar had so much money he was forced to bury tons of it at his peak he was probably more wealthy than 75% of the poorer countries combined.
