While headphones will have better sound quality, for convenience earbuds win out for me.

I voted earbuds but there's an asterisk to that, as I too have issues with them not staying in my ear. So I use ones that have a clip on.

Also I only use them for music, if I were to play a game with a (non-existent) friend then headphones would be preferred.

Yeah, this... at least for my phone and Switch. I don't want to lose an earbud and have to spend $50 on a new pair, because that's exactly what they want to happen. With wired, I've lost one earbud ever (I didn't lose the other one, just one side's cover came off) and a replacement was quite affordable.

Also it's one less thing to charge.
