https://www.wafb.com/2024/07/23/teen-shot-by-homeowner-ding-dong-ditch-prank-gone-wrong-sheriff-says/

A Maine man was arrested after he allegedly shot at a group of teenagers playing ding-dong-ditch, injuring one of them.

Deputies responded to Harrison around 1 a.m. Saturday after numerous reports of gunshots and screaming. Deputies arrived on scene to find blood on the roadway, as a teen walked into the hospital with a gunshot wound.
Just happened to turn over in bed and saw the time, it was 1 a.m. Then, I heard a gunshot, and I know its not hunting season, neighbor Corinne Martin said.

Authorities say a group of teens were playing a prank called ding-dong-ditch at several houses in the area. At the fourth house, the homeowner allegedly opened fire with a 9 mm handgun, firing about 14 rounds and hitting one of the teens in the leg.

The teen went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

In my mind, the kids should not have been doing what they were doing. However, the individual bringing a firearm and shooting at kids while theyre fleeing is obviously a problem, as well, said Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce.

Authorities identified the homeowner as 30-year-old Vincent Martin. He is facing multiple charges, including assault and reckless conduct with a firearm.

People are construing the fact that they can defend their residence, their family, et cetera and maybe taking it a little over the limit in this particular case.

Were living in a world where it just seems like everybody is on edge, Joyce said.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/e/e994dc83.jpg

Although ding-dong-ditch is not illegal, the sheriff says theres still a lesson to be learned here.

This innocent prank needs to be put on a shelf somewhere and never visited again, he said.

Martins bail was set at $5,000. A judge ordered him not to use or purchase firearms or ammunition and not to have any contact with the teens involved in the incident.

Yeah thats psychotic behavior. If someone breaks in I can understand shooting if you feel you/your family are in danger but just ringing your doorbell and having 14 shots ring out as you flee? There needs to be stiffer sentences for discharging your weapon like that. Many many many years of jail.

If your response to someone ringing the doorbell is to open fire, you don't need to own a firearm.

That dangerous and irresponsible action more than overrides kids playing a stupid prank.

Got in his car, chased the kids (who had gotten into a Prius) and rammed them into a tree. Three dead.

I support gun ownership here in the U.S. But this maniac should lose his right to ever own one again. Ding dong ditch is annoying bullshit, especilly that late. But that's no reason to shoot people. Even just showing them the gun would have been too far. This fucker is clearly too unstable to have firearms in the same house.

It's suspicious behavior and it puts people on edge.
Here's a list of other things that are suspicious and put people on edge:

A Doordash driver accidentally pulling up to the wrong address because the map wasn't clear.

Teenagers accidentally knocking on the wrong door for a party

Cars using driveways to turn around on dead end roads

All "suspicious behavior" that has resulted in people getting shot.

It's almost like immediately unloading full clips into anyone you deem suspicious, on sight, is psychotic, unhinged, and in no way deserved this flailing defense you're running.

To say nothing of the fact that shooting anyone in the back as they're running away is ALREADY a, shall we say, "less than great" look.

It's obvious that this guy has been salivating at the idea of going Rambo on home invaders for years. We don't need asides trying to shift blame to teenagers. Paranoid lunatic should not have guns, and we need to crack down on losers deciding to play Terminator with anyone that looks at them kinda funny.

Just checked, and Maine is not a stand your ground (SYG) state. So the shooter's looking at serious prosecution. Castle Doctrine strictly forbids shooting at someone who is actively fleeing you. Fortunately he didn't kill anyone, so he's got that in his favor.

Hopefully, we can get rid of SYG laws. They just encourage more shooting, IMO.

Well not ringing it and running. I truly feel I prevented my brothers house from being broke into once. It was dark out and I was sitting in the dark. No car in the driveway. Someone knocks on the door I and I open it. He looked shocked stammered "wrong house" and hurriedly left. Most everyone in that neighborhood knew my brother and didn't like him just cause at the time he worked in a prison.

So it's my belief dude was trying to make sure the house was empty. I could be wrong but I saw a look of fear on his face when I opened the door.

And yeah I coulda shot him i did have a gun in mu pocket. Not a idiot though, I've always been threat or potential threat is disfused I back down kinda guy.

To throw it out there this was a high crime area.

Should be a count of attempted murder for each member of the group or each bullet fired; whichever is higher. A gun is a weapon and needs to be treated as such; every time you fire it you need to understand someone might die because of it. Luckily the dipshit was a horrible shot and only managed to hit one time out of fourteen, but he shouldn't get a lighter sentence because of that; the attempt was made.

Should be attempted murder or assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Not quite sure what's the difference between those charges but they are separate charges

Did they forget the "ditch" part in this prank? If somebody rings my doorbell at 1am, it is going to take me a minute to get to the door to see wtf is going on. I'd be down the street by then if I was a kid.

Unless this dude was waiting in ambush?

At any rate, that is an absurd response to the situation, dude for sure deserves jail time over this.

Someone setting foot 'on your property' isn't a valid reason to shoot them...

Short of smashing their way into your home, or infiltrating with a weapon in hand, shooting shouldn't be the first response. Well, I suppose adding accelerants to your home in an attempt to set it on fire would rank up there as well if you had family sleeping inside .

Honestly it seems more like people are just itching for a chance to use their gun, more than actually being in fear for their life. So many simple situations get met with lethal force.

Like last year there were 3 incidents within the same week of people being shot simply for going to the wrong place.

There are legit reasons to knock on someone's door at 1 a.m. Obviously in this case it was a prank, but the fucker didn't know that (not that it matters in any event). If, say, my car breaks down and I don't have a phone on me, I shouldn't have to worry about taking a bullet for asking someone to use their phone. At 1 a.m. of course it's an inconvenience, but that wouldn't make the reason any less valid and any more deserving to be shot.
