Cats also pant. Cats internal body temperature is like 102 degrees F, so 97 isn't hot to them.

They usually only pant out of distress though.

Some cats I've owned in the past would play so much, like chasing a toy around, they would pant. Was I actually causing them stress in those situations?

My cats did pant in summer a lot though. it gets over 100 all the time here though.
You could tell they wouldn't wanna go outside for the restroom sometimes. Then again, they'd do the same for the rain, but rarely ever for the cold.

Its not always due to distress, but it is difficult to get a cat to pant from exercise or overheating. If your cat is panting you should keep an eye on them just to be safe.

Alright, good to keep in mind. My current boys are in good health so hopefully they never end up panting. The cat I remember panting from playing was from well over 15 years ago and is no longer alive, but I'm fairly certain it was just a one-time occurrence.

Like others have said, cats have a very high tolerance for heat, and their fur is a natural insulator. There's a you tube vid of a cat's tail catching on fire and all it does is look at it in a kind of "huh, that's interesting" sorta way. The dog that watches it happen gets more upset.

Yeah, and my boys always sleep very close to me in the winter and when the AC makes my room comfortably cold for me.

That's not even remotely true. Lions and cats aren't even in the same branch within felidae.

Cats love (direct) heat.

Obviously they can overheat but generally speaking, an otherwise healthy cat will be able to tolerate being in direct sunlight or in temperatures a human may find uncomfortable.

Incorrect! Please don't talk nonsense about things you know nothing about. We have enough misinformation these days already.

Here's a quick lesson in taxonomy. Lions are known as Panthera leo while domesticated cats Felis catus. Both Panthera leo and Felis catus belong to felidae family like this:
This is lion:
Felidae [family] --> Pantherinae [subfamily] --> Panthera [genus] --> Panthera leo [species]

This is domesticated cat:
Felidae [family] --> Felinae [subfamily] --> Felis [genus] --> Felis catus [species]
To put it simply, both cats and lions share a common ancestor but cats do not descend from lions. See their subfamily.

Just for fun let's see dogs & wolves. Dogs are known as Canis lupus familiaris. It belongs to canidae family like this:
This is dog:
Canidae [family] --> Canis [genus] --> Canis lupus [species] --> Canis lupus familiaris [subspecies]
Do you see Canis lupus above? That's wolf or to be precise, gray wolf from Eurasia and North America. To put it simply, dogs do descend from (gray) wolves.
