Additionally the opposing ticket introduced the prospect of electing the first black president, so McCain attempted to counter that with the prospect of electing the first woman vice president (McCain did get 15% of Hillary's primary voters to flip to him in the general, so this play may have had some amount of success). She was a good pick in theory but terrible in practice due to being crazy.
