I'm talking the early days of them.

When they were a brand new concept. There was no wiki for the game, you didn't know everything about it day one, everyone was just running around figuring shit out. Getting into adventures and meeting people was the name of the game. Joining parties, making friends, and in some cases enemies. Not no life-ing it solo and rushing to "endgame." Nothing was handed to you, you earned the rewards you got and it felt so damn good when you got them.

I don't see any world in which we could ever go back to that.

I learned so much about computers when I played Runescape. One of my friends from school told me to play it as my mom had just bought a computer. I learned how to type, how to make an e-mail address, copy+paste, take screen shots and save them, open multiple tabs on browser, how to type in URLs, how to download games, etc. all just from wanting to play Runescape.

I loved Runescape and later Puzzle Pirates and later Secret World.

I don't feel the same sense of community in any of these games (well, haven't touched Puzzle Pirates since it was in beta) and it is a real shame.

I feel that exact same pain now and then, tc. Freshly released MapleStory had such wonder and whimsy to it. There are so many retro fan servers that try to capture that magic, but it's just not possible. We know too much. You'd need to somehow get everyone who joins a new game to sign a fuckin' NDA to approach something similar.

Thats how WoW was for me. I started in Wrath. Took me a good 8 or 9 months to get to level 80 because I had to figure out everything on my own through exploring. When I finally killed the Lich King my guild was freaking the fuck out because I won Invincible. I didnt think it was a big deal because I assumed it was a 100% drop rate but it wasnt. You dont get good memories like that in MMOs anymore.

Nobody remembers EverQuest raiding? 75-100 people per raid. This was before voice chat so you had to create multiple chat channels to communicate with your raid. People getting blacklisted on their server for upsetting the wrong person. Only 2-5 guilds on each server could run anything high-end.

Can't deny that playing world of warcraft like not too much longer after it first released was freakin' nuts. The trip I made with my best friend and brother just to do scarlet monstary instance as an alliance player was a actual adventure. Actually creeping by higher level horde players to get on boats and whatnot, lol. The actual danger going through stranglethorn vale. I was a druid player so all I had was my travel cat form to go around until I can get that level 40 mount. No flying mounts so everything had to be boots on the ground and hauling ass if opposite faction players is feeling frisky if you are in their territory.

Vanilla wow really was one of those "you hide to be there" type of experiences.

I also played city of heroes and city of villains when they were a thing and those games were also pretty cool.

Probably like the most friendliest mmo community I can think of. Everytime I didn't know what to do with my character abilities and things like that and I asked a question in chat about my scrapper some guy in chat was replying breaking my question down for me in like 5 seconds, and then they are offering to party up and chill. Wanna' do a raid and wanted to play? Man these dudes didn't care, your build don't matter come right the hell in let's beat some ass.

Like just one big comic book nerdy most likely high 24/7 chill community, lol.

Vanilla wow really was one of those "you hide to be there" type of experiences.

It was like nothing else.

One of my my fondest memories that you reminded me off is getting an Owl pet as a low level Tauren Hunter. Which meant going to Teldrassil (the Night Elf zone). The journey there literally felt like stepping into foreign, hostile lands. And it involved more deaths than I could count. Because the guards would one-shot me the second I rezzed. So I would ghost walk to my corpse. Position as far away as I could, rez, attempt to run as much as I could. Get struck down immediately. Repeat. I also had to do this at a stupid hour of the night where there would be less players so they didnt spawn camp me.

Eventually I was able to get out of the towns and cities and capture my owl

And let me tell you. It was so worth it. Because once I brought him back to Crossroads, I was like the most popular kid in school. I had endless messages from everyone I ran past wondering how and where I got an owl.

Thats the kind of experience you just cant get anymore. Forming your own adventure and being rewarded in a unique way that wows other players.

I wasn't. But I was kind of a big deal. Even doing terrible stuff like camping Tiamat or Fafnir was fun(ish).

The community is still the same pretty much! The fan revival for CoH/V got an official "OK" to operate so it's basically officially revived. Been having a blast.

This reminds me to recommend MUDs if you're looking for that sort of new experience again. Achaea, for instance, has a strongly encouraged, but not mandated, "no spoilers" policy. Universally this means that you will get hints from players instead of outright told and carried. It's a MUD, though, so you'd have be to into that sort of thing.
