i just finished yakuza kiwami and it was really solid, but not nearly as good as zero and much shorter. zero was incredible imo

starting 2 now, how does it stack up to those other two?

Kiwami 2 uses the engine from Yakuza 6, so it looks better and fights feel more dynamic, iirc

I've only played the original versions of Yakuza and Yakuza 2 (I played Y0, as well), but from what I remember, Y2 was longer so I wouldn't be surprised if Kiwami 2 was the same.

I can't remember the lengths in relation to Yakuza 0, though.

Yes-ish. They are pretty close overall, but I'd say that 2 is relevantly longer than 1.

Much shorter than 0, though.

Kiwami 2 is easily the worst of the Yakuza games I've played (0, 3, and both Kiwamis). The combat is the shallowest in the series (that I've played), and the game actively looks worse than its predecessors and takes WAY more resources so that some lights can look slightly better. I have never played a more unstable game on PC, either. K2 crashed on me at least 200 times, and at least half of those were just from opening the game. It's not like the story is any good, either.

Kiwami 2 absolutely does not look worse than its predecessors lmao where did that come from. Kiwami is a solid entry in the series, definitely not the worst.

Kiwami 1 is my least favorite game in the series other than original 1 and 2. Its got worse combat than 3 and many of its systems are just haphazardly ripped from 0 and pasted onto the framework of 1.

They improved the hell out of the overworld (you can go in buildings without a loading screen!), it brings back Sotenbori and the Cabaret Club stuff, and it has an ok-ish tactics minigame with its own story.

But the basic gameplay is a step backward, they nerfed some of the minigames, the ending is super dumb and Majima is not nearly as entertaining.

If you could play one hour of each, you'd probably have the best with with K2, but 0 and K1 are both better for the long haul.

Honestly, I see tons of people praise Kiwami 2 over Kiwami 1, but the story really didn't do it for me, compared to the others and I didn't like the combat as much. So for me it was 0 > K1 > K2

I can understand liking the story less, but i really think Kiwami 1s combat doesnt get enough hate.

Going from 0 to Kiwami 1 feels so jarring even though they just copy pasted the 0 fighting styles. Every style just feels worse and less fluid to use, and beast got nerfed into the ground. Also lterally every heavy attack puts you on the floor which is probably my biggest criticism of the combat.

The Shimano 1st fight in Kiwami 1 is also easily one of the worst fights in the series

K2 is the second Dragon Engine game and they're still figuring some stuff out, but it looks significantly better than 0/K1 for sure. In terms of combat it's better than K1 and worse than 0.

Storywise it's fine. It's a Yakuza game, it's exactly what you expect from them in terms of story, just with a particularly beloved standout villain.

For me, I started with Kiwami then went straight to Kiwami 2 and instantly hated the lack of style switching. Didn't hate Kiwami's styles because I hadn't played 0 yet.

My only real qualm with K1 combat was that the enemies block CONSTANTLY.

Like, at times you're reduced to doing flybys just to bait them into attacking JUST so that they for once in their lives will NOT block.

The only game that stood out with enemies blocking too much was 3. Holy shit that got annoying lol.

And to be fair that's due to the fps being higher on the remaster.

I always see a lot of the community say K2 is one of the worst entries and I've personally never understood why. Like, okay, it removes a few things from Y2 original. Nothing really important IMO. I like K2 just fine.

The only things K2 removed are some tiny ass area with 2 shops and the Host Club management (which I heard sucked anyway)

Way better than 1, but not nearly as good as 0. 0 was the first one I played, so it kind of hurt my enjoyment of 1. It's pretty barebones and I wasn't ( still not honestly) a fan of the new engine

Y0 9/10
Y1 6.5/10
Y2-8/10

K2 was actually the game that bored me enough to take a break from the series. Got burned out after playing Zero and then K1 back to back. K2 was more like K1 and the story didn't interest me. I plan on going back eventually though. 0 was amazing so I went right to 1 expecting the same, but was disappointed neither 1 or 2 lived up to it.

K2 is great, it's one of those games that I wish I'd never played so I could go back and play it for the first time.

K1 and K2 are the only Yakuza games that are really challenging on normal difficulty, I find that the non-kiwami games are way too easy on normal and way too annoying on hard, but Kiwami 1 and 2 struck a nice balance on normal. K1 is definitely a lot more challenging than K2 and requires you to really invest in your skills.

Yakuza 0 definitely has a great story and a lot to do but that's kind of it, the unchallenging combat means the game just gets a bit repetitive and chore-ish after a while, whereas K1 and K2 keep challenging you more.

K2 just looks amazing with the dragon engine, having seamless combat and building entering is so overdue for the series. The combat system is way simpler than K1 but I didn't mind because I was having so much fun playing the game. The dragon engine ragdoll is excessive though so you get funny stuff like enemies flying through the air after they fall over.
