Red dead redemption 2.

I have always been the type of person that preferred great gameplay in my video games compared to everything else, and so even if a game has a terrible story (for me this is the bayonetta series in a nutshell, and the vast majority of tales of games just has a standard meh/sorta' boring main plot) the gameplay alone can easily carry a video game.

Red dead redemption 2 is one of those extremely rare video game examples where the main story and the characters was so good I completely overlooked/didn't even care about that rockstar clunky'ish gameplay.

I'd like to give a shoutout to Portal. And also Portal. The Valve game is legendary but before that the C64 interactive novel game was by far the game that blew my mind for dozens of revolutionary concepts I'd never seen in any other work of science fiction, even the best of them. The description of what essentially was the entire population of the world being teleported to the other side of the universe and their bodies forming a ring around another planet still haunts me over 35 years later.

Honestly, very few come to mind.

FF9 came first, for being consistent, clear, and having complex, yet fun. The world is realized, the dialogue is good, and even the final boss has relevance if you understand thematic stuff.

Chrono Cross was another one. Sometimes it is almost poetic. And no, I dont have a problem with how it handled CT. I appreciate the direction, I felt it when we realized what went down, and it made it more heartbreaking.

The only other ones I can think of are VNs, which really shouldnt count. But Hotel Dusk and the sequel popped into my head.

Recently, I played Mad Rat Dead. While the dialogue isnt special, the themes are kind of a rare thing to see in games, or any story. A story about a rat who swears revenge on a scientist who experimented on him, after the Rat God gives him one more day to correct any wrongs he feels. He eventually comes to terms that not only is revenge was driving him mad, and that life is about the journey and not the destination, but he even goes as far as trying to understand the scientist, because he learns how to communicate instead of just acting on his feelings. I really appreciated the character development from such an unexpected place.

You know what games have good writing? The first two Fear Effect games. Snappy dialogue, funny interactions, one-linery badassitude -- everything works fantastically. Haven't played Sedna, and I'd be surprised if it's up to the same level, but the series has generally delivered.

The House in Fata Morgana comes to mind for sure.

It's a VN that doesn't really shy away from really uncomfortable topics, but never feels like it's touching on them for shock value or anything like that. The overall story gets very dark, but is ultimately quite beautiful. I really love that game.
