They were never trying to replicate it. They've always been something different.
Except they were trying to replicate it with these legendary movies. Something different was the 1998 movie imo. Godzilla is so different in that it's great. A fast, a more vulnerable Godzilla, weaving in and out of buildings making dens and laying eggs was great.
