The Comstock Act (linked here and here at the Legal Information Institute) is an 1873 anti-obscenity law, named after anti-vice crusader Anthony Comstock. The law, which is still on the books, calls for banning the mailing or shipping of "every obscene, lewd, lascivious, indecent, filthy or vile article, matter, thing, device, or substance." In addition, it specifically outlaws mailing "every article or thing designed, adapted, or intended for producing abortion."

The intent of the law was not expressly about abortion, according to Mary Ziegler, law professor at the University of California, Davis. Instead, it was about what Comstock and his contemporaries called "sexual purity."

"The fear was that if people knew about abortion and contraception, which was also outlawed originally, that they would have sex they shouldn't have, just as if they, you know, looked at pornography," Ziegler said.

Of course, abortion pills as well as many things that might be considered"obscene," "lewd" and so on are currently sent through the mail. That's because the legal interpretation of the Comstock Act was narrowed repeatedly over the years.

The law's abortion provisions were rendered moot by Roe v. Wade in 1973. But with the Supreme Court overturning Roe in 2022, opponents of abortion rights started viewing Comstock as a way to restrict abortion, without the need for Congress or the courts to do anything.

In particular, that policy is promoted by "Project 2025."

"A straightforward interpretation of the statute is that it prohibits all interstate shipment or sale of abortion drugs and devices, regardless of whether state law allows abortion," Craddock says.

More in the link, including discussion of Project 2025. The article is from April, however I feel like not a lot of people know that this is their strategy for having a national abortion ban without legislating one, as the Comstock Act is still officially on the books.

Abortion is bad for the economy. How are the hospitals supposed to make all that childbirth money if people give them the old coathanger treatment early on? Seriously though, you people need to start a god damn revolution to get proper healthcare access.

Even playing devil's advocate and trying to put myself in their shoes, how does this actually benefit anyone outside of hypothetically being a reason for a lawmaker to pat themselves on the back and say "God probably approves of this decision"?

Appeasing the 5% of voters who believe abortion is murder.

Again, I'm just putting myself in the shoes of a politician or financier who is interested in keeping American citizens down to secure power and money. Going off that, wouldn't it make sense to try to appeal to as many voting demographics as possible so there's an even higher chance of "success"? As far as the GOP goes we've already been seeing diminishing returns by them trying too hard to appeal to the MAGA crowd, only for a lot of Republican politicians to be accused of being "RINOs".

Why? You are ignoring their constant attempts at eroding voting rights of citizens. They are doing this donkey shit on TOP of making it easier to keep their power and money.

Unfortunately, so many terminally online leftists think Project 2025 is just BS from "desperate" Democrats.

They don't care about appealing to voters that aren't their base because they plan on ending elections when they get back in.

That may be, however it's a 100+ year law still on the books and Republicans certainly aren't going to give a shit when they enforce it to achieve their Christo-fascist goal (Anthony Comstock was also a Christo-fascist, dude was seriously crazy from his religious beliefs and wanted to force everybody else to live by them. He pretty much created sting operations by posing as someone who wanted to buy pornography and then had police who were close by come in to arrest the seller. He'd also try to preach to his fellow Union soldiers during the war and get super butthurt mad cause so many soldiers would pass around porno mags/books. It's considered the main reason he wanted to go on this anti-lascivious crusade).

The Google definitions I've found don't match up with how I've seen it used here. When posters here use it it seems to be some combination of A) They still support Biden B) They say Biden should be voted for because the alternative of Trump winning is far worse and will bring about the actual destruction of the nation as we know it and C) vote blue no matter who

Basically they're trying to claim that Biden has some sort of Trump-equivalent level of cultism due to those reasons.

Just ask CountCorvinius or whatever, that joke loves calling anyone under the sun blue maga
