Yeah, a lot of AAA games have been adopting that paid early access practice. It's dumb. The first time I ever encountered that was for the MMO ArcheAge. At least there it made sense because for an mmo like that, getting a 4 day headstart was a huge bonus for the competitive players. You could buy houses and things in-game, and it was first come first serve. The headstart players got to claim the good locations first.

What's also been dumb to me is when AAA games offer a "beta test" like a month before release, but you have to pre-order the game to gain access. That's just paying for a glorified demo if the beta is that close to the release date.

They need to stop taking ideas from MMO's and using them in stupid (greedy) ways.

Imagine if GTA6 released in November, but for 20-30 bucks you could play it in October ( aka a week early)

even Baldur's Gate 3 had something like that - for $80, you could get the "deluxe" version, where you could play it 3 days earlier than its official release date.

I'm not sure if that's how it was for PC, but it was the case for the PS5.

There's another Assassins Creed coming out? Didn't the last one come out less than a year ago? Surely at this point it's just the exact same gameplay with some different voice actors and the colours changed from blue to green or something?

iirc that one, Mirage, started out as a DLC for Valhalla but it got too big so it was sold as its own thing.

Meanwhile, and I'll pick on Far Cry here, since FC3 it's been two years since each release. Strip away the graphics and the gameplay's almost identical. It was fun at first, being able to dive into a new game knowing 90% of how the gameplay works, but when you're playing Far Cry 6, sniping away at outpost #71, you realise it's the same old shit.
