1923 is I believe the earliest usage and was used throughout the following decades, however it was mostly popularized in the 60s during the struggle for Civil Rights when the black community would tell each other to "stay woke" while in the murderously hostile and racist South.

In modern times, though, this notion of "woke culture" is used by bigots because things like "woke" and "DEI" is just a substitute for racist, sexist, and homophobic slurs.

I personally don't believe in letting them appropriate the term and reject that usage. It's pretty sickening to take a term the black community created and coined and basically use it as a substitute for the n-word.
