Ireland, Norway, and Spain to recognize the Palestinian State.

Israeli government response: summon the ambassadors and make them watch a video of the October atrocity.

I wonder if watching videos of a country murdering civilians will become a standard method of deciding whether their statehood should be recognised. And also how Israel would fare under such a system. Or, indeed, a lot of countries.

The irony is that the female IDF members on that video had warned that something would happen soon, but were ignored.

There were already a bunch of middle/eastern European nations that recognised Palestine. Ireland, Spain and Norway are just the most recent ones to do it officially.

Maybe more will follow suit soon. Would be nice to see Europe step up and give some political power and recognition to Palestine (fuck Hamas though).

There needs to be proper peace negotiations and a robust ceasefire which isn't going to happen if Israel are going to continually get the lion's share of international support.

Interesting. According to this map pretty much all of Eastern Europe (except for Greece and North Macedonia for some reason?) Recognizes it, but, except for Sweden, those 3 countries are the 1st ever western Europe countries to do it. So that is still a major step. Hopefully more Western European countries will follow suit. Personally I expect the 1st major western power to recognize it would be France.

Oh, and Mexico recognizes it, too bad its northern neighbor is the exact opposite >_>.

PS: I find it fascinating that, looking at this map, basically all of earth recognizes it except Western Europe and USA and Canada. That says a lot.

Yeah. There is support from a lot of other nations but it's really America and Europe that would be needed to step due to how much weight their support carries in negotiations.

ICC. I am hyped for the arrests to take place but it could be months before the panel of judges decides whether to issue the warrants.

https://www.axios.com/2024/05/22/israel-netanyahu-hamas-arrest-warrant-icc

*exerpted*
This review process has taken weeks to several months in past cases.
If the warrants are issued, Netanyahu, Gallant and Hamas leaders would face severe restrictions on their ability to travel, as they could be arrested in any of the countries that recognize the ICC, which includes most of Europe.
The travel restrictions would likely affect Netanyahu and Gallant far more than Hamas leaders. The U.S. has designated Sinwar, Deif and Haniyeh global terrorists, and they are already under travel bans and other sanctions.
The outstanding arrest warrants could be particularly damaging for Netanyahu and Gallant, as other government officials may hesitate to offer backing or assistance.

Now if there was a reward for turning them in ...

Most of the recognition were carried over from the Cold War era. Nowadays many Central/Eastern European governments like Hungary and Poland are heavily pro-Israel due to their right wing shift in the last decades.

The law that the asshole tried to invoke only applies to non-Israeli press. BTW, he's doubled down and blames Gallant for not giving him the okay to confiscate the equipment beforehand *and calling Gallant weak for not demanding that the AP be prevented from operating in Gaza* rather than admit his error. ICJ orders Israel to halt Rafah offensive and open Gaza border crossing

The court rules that Israel must immediately halt its military offensive and other actions in Rafah, citing the "immediate risk" to the Palestinian people.

The ICJ has made several orders including for Israel to:
- halt military operation in Rafah
- open the Rafah border crossing with Egypt for the entry of humanitarian aid at scale
- ensure access to Gaza for investigators and fact-finding missions
- report to the court within a month on its progress in applying these measures

Judge Salam also spoke about the situation of Israeli hostages who are still being held by Hamas in Gaza.

"The court expresses grave concern over the fate of the hostages... and calls for their immediate and unconditional release," he tells the court.

"We find it deeply troubling that many still remain in captivity," he adds.

Russia and Israel are already pretty tight economically and politically. If anything them getting weapons from Russia may break the ties between Russia and Iran. I don't think anti-Israel states on friendly terms with Russia would keep those terms if Russia began being the source of weaponry used to kill Muslims/Palestinians. And given how the world is turning against supporting Israel due to their warmongering and genocidal goals I don't think Russia would gain much by this course of action in terms of other countries being friendlier towards them.

U.S. officials tell the NewsHour that the administration is debating whether to lift a restriction on the use of American weapons to target Russian weapons in Russia.

It still blows my mind that we put restrictions on weapons we give Ukraine to fight off an invasion by our adversary while allowing Israel carte blanche to bomb hospitals, universities, refugee camps, etc.

Not sure why that would blow anyone's mind. The political constraints/dynamics are very different when you're fighting another global super power, versus some poor people that don't even have a functioning state.

Obviously in the case of Russia the US is to some extent wary of escalation, particularly because in Ukraine Russia maintains escalatory dominance and will always be willing to take things 1 step further, and because the US doesn't want to directly implicate itself in attacks on Russian soil for fear of some kind of retaliatory measures.

Palestinians sadly don't have the political power or influence of a global super power, such that their opponents need not fear any reprisal or counter-measures from them. You can pretty much murder them with impunity, the only direct consequences seem to be from regional groups like the Houthis and Hezbollah.

It makes sense when you consider their logic is not "do the right thing" but merely "prevent the risk of escalations that threaten us".

If they were concerned about doing the right thing, we'd have a Palestinian state and Israel would be completely demilitarized or at most allowed only a Japan style self defence force.

At least eight rockets were launched from the Rafah area in southern Gaza and several were intercepted, the Israeli military says.

The Israeli army is carrying out a military operation in Rafah. No injuries have been reported.

Rocket sirens were sounded in other cities and towns, including Herzliya and Petah Tikva.

At least 20 Palestinians killed by Israeli strikes at displaced area in Gaza's Rafah

GAZA, May 26 (Reuters) - At least 20 Palestinians were killed and dozens of others wounded after a number of Israeli air strikes hit a camp for the displaced in Gaza's Rafah which set their tents on fire, a civil emergency official told Reuters.

A final death toll at Tal Al-Sultan camp is still being determined, another medic said, adding that dozens were injured by the fire that ensued after the strikes, which residents are still trying to put out.
There was no immediate comment from Israel.
