Like I was pulling some dandelions today and it just hit me. Why do people hate these things so much. They are like little flowers that I don't have to water.

They are an invasive weed that is difficult to eradicate because the seeds are wind-propagated, and failing to remove every bit of root results in a new plant.
If you chop the root into little bits, each piece will become a new plant.

That's half the why.

For lawn fetishist, they do stick out from the classic uniform green lawn look.

But even for those those that don't care as much. They grow taller than most lawn plants, the grow quickly and they spread. And their stalks do look pretty ugly once they are naked. Like I don't care about having a perfect green turf lawn but even I get annoyed when with just patches of dandelions pop up compared to the other plants in my yard.

The other aspect is social. Right or wrong, dandelions, especially ones that have gone white, are considered weeds that are supposed to be removed. By extension a person who has a lot of dandelions isn't taking care of their property and thus are lazy and have bad maintenance. And that is not an assumption people like having made about them. So people who might otherwise not care about dandelions, get rid of them anyway. And that just perpetuates the cycle.

The funny thing about weeds is that there's no real definition of weed or why it's bad.

I straight-up think the term just means "somebody smarter than me doesn't like it."

Dandelions arent considered invasive, and they are far better for a native ecosystem than a green lawn

theres been a push in my community to let dandelions grow because they are good for pollinators, and now most people leave them be around here

They dont pose a threat to any plants or animals, so I wouldnt call them invasive in the technical sense. Theyre edible and have a great flavor when added to water. They provide more benefits to a yard than negatives. Pollinators love them.

"It's a weed" is circular reasoning. The definition of a weed is any plant that you don't like. Saying that you don't like it because it's a weed is not giving a reason as to why you dislike it.

IMO, dandelions grow easily on their own so their presence shows a lack of personal lawn care.
I moved up to New Jersey from Florida recently and seeing more natural lawns with occasional dandelions is beautiful in comparison to the completely artificial garbage lawns of Florida.

I'm sorry I'm no druid and have bought into society's view on what a nice lawn is supposed to look like. Also I don't want no garden snakes on my lawn. The cleaner they are the less likely they'll appear.

Ahhh yes good excuse for laziness lol

I just mowed my lawn today, fucking hate yard work. I had lots of dandies, and a ton of bees in my backyard too. I felt kinda guilty tbh.

Pretty much everybody around here was putting off the first mow of the year until today it seems. I must have heard about 4 or 5 other mowers going throughout the day in my immediate area.

Thats why I have no problem with rabbits. Groundhogs however <_<
the last time I caught a groundhog scavenging our garden, I threw a tortilla or something, he scrambled and smashed into the fence, then climbed away.

Groundhogs and wild hares both carry a lot of really nasty and potentially fatal diseases like tularemia, hantavirus, and leptospirosis. Mowing a moist lawn full of hare turds can send the tularemia airborne and give you pneumonia (tularemia is most commonly contracted through direct contact with hares and hare feces)

He needs to not be lazy and plant a native garden instead (which requires pulling of nonnative weeds); that is exponentially better for pollinators. Make sure to get come Curcurbits in there for the squash bees.

Sure it is. Everything that your professor does is great for ecosystems and pollinators and all that but it looks like crap compared to a well manicured, golf course like, lawn.

I have contemplated taking my lawn seriously but its so much work and money. The idea of leveling it and getting a reel mower so that I can walk around barefoot is nice. But when it comes down to it I cant commit. I have done the easy stuff (soil tests, pre emergent, bug killers, fertilizers, regular cuts) but dont want to take on too much. Dandelions and other weeds stick out now that I care a little. They are hard to get rid of.

Dandelions fly (literally) in the face of conventional lawn maintenance fundamentals. People like to have a uniform grass lawn and have their flowers outside of the lawn in areas they control. Dandelions are good at surviving and really good at reproducing and spreading over an entire yard very quickly.

If I remember right, dandelions are not native to North America and were brought by Europeans because of their medicinal qualities. They are also a legume that can fix the nitrogen in the soil (there's a fungus that can grow on the roots of legumes that can make nitrogen in the air bioavailable to plants). But companies that make herbicides had a hard time creating a herbicide that kills weeds but not dandelions, so we see them as weeds

flowers like dandelions growing in your yard are way better for the environment than a big green lawn
