Everytime I use the ATM it takes me less than 2 minutes to do what I need to do. If I need to do anything that'll take longer then I go inside my bank.

Do people try to balance their accounts at the ATM or some shit?

thinking about what they should have for dinner and calculating the cost and how much to withdraw for ingredients the moment it's their turn and not a second before.

Seriously, I ask myself this every time I get in line for an ATM. It has never taken me more than 2-3 minutes but some people are up there for like 10 minutes+. I have no idea what type of business they are conducting with a machine that would take so long.

Some people know exactly how much they want to take out and from which account.

Other people it dawns on them the moment they step up to the screen that they have to type in a number.

It doesn't take much effort to think "hey I thought I was gonna take out 40 bucks, but I guess I'll just take 80 instead".

I know you can deposit checks or even cash checks from ATMs at the bank but damn man wouldn't it be better to inside and have a rep help you do that?

If you want to do a simple account-to-account transaction, the bank will point you to an ATM machine. In my case the tellers will flat out refuse to help you because they are busy handling cold cash, cheque, plus any other transactions involving physical stuff.

Let's say I have a single card to handle the following:
1.) Basic utility + phone/internet/cable
2.) Insurance and subscriptions, either monthly or annual
3.) School/college tuition and fees
4.) Online shopping and groceries
5.) Cash withdrawal
That's gonna take a while even for a single household. Sometimes a single ATM user will pay for more than one household (parents, spouse, kids). In that case multiply the time needed as necessary.

Depends on the bank but yeah you can. I think I can pay for pretty much everything there. Safer than internet-based system if you're worried about malware and bad hacker.

not everyone is just coming through for wallet money

I've made business transactions before and I'd never do it using an ATM.

For the same reason people use self check. They don't feel like fucking with a person.

Balance checkbook. Pay bills. Do taxes. Wash dishes. Build a birdhouse. Change the car oil. Normal ATM stuff.

It's check, nothing to it:) I use the spesific spelling "cheque" as catch-all for paper transactions out of habit.

You can do a business transaction using an ATM as long as both parties agree to it, for example: personal escrow service for small local marketplace. It's legit and you can record it in the ledger just fine.

Sure if you're not holding up a line.

I imagine most people arent prepared at all. And then when theyre done they have to put everything away, write notes, check their mirrors, check their phone, make a phone call, etc. Takes me hardly no time but if Im depositing I already have out everything I need, if Im withdrawing I know how much I need and have my card out and ready. Then I pull forward a little bit when Im done to finish putting stuff away, so the person behind me can pull up and get to the atm.

Part of the large point of this topic is to be considerate and don't hold up the line unless you really have to.
