Absolutely loved 2016 when I played it last year, playing through Eternal now a little less fun with the platforming and "eyes flash green" encounters

Doom 2016 is one of the greatest first person shooters ever made but I havent played Eternal because I heard it has tacked on hard for the sake of being hard difficulty, fuck that Souls bullshit.

I liked Eternal more, but I can see why 2016 is much more loved.

Eternal is much more difficult while 2016 is basically "point your weapon of choice at the enemy and shoot".

Eh all theybdid was make it where it's much more optimal to use specific weapons against specific demons and/or they got a weak spot.

The dlc was tough as hell though.

I couldn't get into Eternal. I got to some part where I had to jump onto a ledge and kept falling so got a refund. I was like if what should be a simple jump is this hard early in the game I'm going to hate the rest of it.

I enjoyed playing Doom 2016 from start to finish, and felt it had a more enjoyable atmosphere. There would be normal battles with the occasional Epic one sprinkled in that made them feel special. There was too much going on in Eternal's combat and the platforming parts were lame. In eternal few encounters were special because they all felt the same.

eternal stressed me out, i thought it was pretty hard on normal. but i think it would be bearable if i used kbm cuz i played it using a controller. that and i didnt know the fire thingy was pretty important.

When I was playing through Eternal I was pretty sure 2016 was the better game, largely because I hated all the platforming in Eternal. Whoever decided that Doom needed a bunch of complicated jumping puzzles can go to hell. I also really disliked the lore changes in Eternal.

But when I tried to play 2016 immediately after, I realized how much better the combat actually is in Eternal. It makes 2016 feel a little dull in comparison.

yeah gotta give it to eternal. that fast paced gameplay is pretty intense, and overall the game isn't a slog or difficult. had a blast shooting my way through eternal.

2016 is good but i always get burnt out before i finish the game. it's just slower and less interesting imo. i don't see how it's superior in any way.

2016 since it felt gritty and heavy in the atmosphere. Eternal had the kill enemies this certain way and "pyrovision" atmosphere. Both were still really fun.

I like 2016 because you could use the guns you liked, switch it up a little and keep moving and youll be fine.

Eternal essentially made you use certain weapons against certain enemies and made you move and jump constantly. I never had any plan it was just move constantly and shoot when I could.

its very different in design philosophy. it isnt simply 'more' and 'bigger' - it requests (maybe even expects) different behavior from the player. u may not notice on normal or easier modes, but as you go up the ranks it completely changes the flow and scope of things. its still a fast paced gallery shooter yeah, but it begins to demand near perfection

some people like that, but i dont. and altho eternal was my game of the year that year, i found that a marked decline following 2016. and the DLC i actually outright disliked

oh forgot to mention the hub world. it was alright. i dont like the deification of doomguy in lore, and i dont like the space castle. its weird. its fun to fuck around in there and explore tho. and i had fun unlocking the unmakyr

I preferred 2016 for the design and atmosphere, plus I'm better at it.

I do recognize that Eternal has deeper gameplay and that my inability is 100% a skill issue.

I concur with the issues people have with the lack of flexibility to deal with demons how you like in Eternal. Mauraders are especially bad in the way you're trolling if you don't use a very specific strategy. Gauss Cannon dominance in 2016 was an issue, but this wasn't the solution.

Also I kinda feel like they pushed the Doom Slayer's antics too far in Eternal, which makes him feel less impressive than in 2016.

Big issue with Eternal is how long it takes to get all the major tools. The pacing is okay for new folks, but you really feel it when you start a new save and you have the knowledge and experience.

One thing I figured out at the end of 2016 is to change your jump to a bumper button like L1. It makes it so you can jump and aim and move without needing to remove your fingers from the sticks which helps TREMENDOUSLY.

It becomes much better when you use it enough. The Dying Light games default to using them so I was already used to it, but when you're trying to run around in the end game of either Doom, it becomes untenable to use X or A to jump on a controller cause you need to be aiming jumping and moving all at once.

I honestly don't get the complaints that you HAVE to use specific weapons on specific demons.
The only time that's really the case is on Cacos on like, level 1 and 2, and on Stone Imps in the DLC, but otherwise that's really not a thing.
