The only reason the US is trying to ban it is because they can't compete with it. Every other reason is just bullshit.

I am not well-versed in TikTok but what I have seen doesn't seem to be particularly egregious for a modern social media platform.

Social media needs maturity checks. Small businesses need more advertisement opportunities cause they're always defending Social media for that. Banning it and creating a war on it like drugs won't work.

As nice as it'd be, the government is not doing this for societal reasons. Tik-tok is an Eastern market app and is owned by such corporations still. The legalese is complicated, but the US doesn't get as much money as you'd think from 170m users. They basically are trying to force the owner to sell it to a US company.

This isn't really a ban. They're just forcing the Chinese stakeholders to divest into American companies. The only real problem with the law is that it singles out tiktok when it should actually apply to all social media or other data harvesting platforms like Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook.

There's no information you can get from TikTok that you can't get elsewhere - and you're going to need to go to better resources to actually get any details on stuff anyway. It's cool if TikTok exposed you to new information, but you could have just as easily gotten that information on Twitter, Youtube, or Wikipedia, just to name a few.

YouTube's algorithm pushes self harm, white supremacy, and out-and-put terrorist content all the time. Facebook's algorithm locks you into whatever alt-right, antivax, trans-murdering, government-toppling echo chamber you want. There's nothing "unique" there.

And the Privacy Wars have been lost for over a decade, now. China has all the info on anyone they could ever want. So does Russia. Taiwan. India. And they happily trade it with everyone else. There's nothing unique here, either. And There's no correcting it. That ship hasn't just sailed, it's carried Frodo and Gandalf off from the Gray Havens; it's not coming back.

You can get that information elsewhere sure, but just as easily or as fast? Not really. Twitter used to be good for breaking news but then Musk bought it. Maybe the youtube or facebook short things are a good alternative, but outside of those and tiktok there arent many good media platforms left for rapidly spreading important information.

Twitter has always been dogshit, too, and definitely worse under Musk - but most of the Nazi stuff that people know about still being on the platform, they literally only know about it cuz organizations dedicated time LOOKING FOR IT. Most of the tweets in those had less than 100 impressions. Realistically, no one was seeing it. It should still be gone - but it's not getting fed into peoples shit unless they're looking for it.

Getting that type of same content anywhere else is like winning the lotto. The uploader needs to either have hundreds of thousands of followers already to or by some miracle it goes viral in order to get views. Tiktok you upload anything that's worth going viral for like racist saying and doing racist things or breaking news, you see it within hours or within 1 day and it goes viral even if people have less than 20 followers and a few videos with less than 100 likes

It was common for American politicians to use anti-Asian slurs and encourage destruction of Japanese made cars/electronics. An innocent man of Chinese descent named Vincent Chin was murdered because two laid off auto workers mistook him for Japanese and pummeled him to death. They never served jail time and were simply given probation. It's really sad to see history repeating itself.
