Basically cat caught one of its claws the other day and did some damage. Vet tried to fix it up as best as possible but its not grown back correctly so says we need to declaw that particular foot. Im worried. Isnt it painful to declaw a cat?

Yes, but for the same reason that amputation is a thing the vet can have a very valid reason for saying to declaw. And I'm no professional so I'd have to defer to the professional here.

Declawing a cat because it's medically necessary is fine, but unfortunate.

Declawing a cat because you're an idiot who didn't realize cats have claws is not fine (not directed at you, towards the ones who do that).

If the vet says do it, you do it.

It's like Ellis said, sometimes you gotta amputate.

Like, it's roughly like cutting off your fingertip, which is something a doctor would (hopefully) be hesitant to do.

If a truck runs over the your fingertips, they're probably gonna cut them off regardless of normally being hesitant.

Also a fair option, it's a big decision.

Unless it has a waiting period of more than a few days, because this sounds like something that needs to be addressed before claw growth hurts the toe beans.

Declawing is unnecessary and likely do not benefit cats in any way, but in general I have not seen cats that, in controlled indoor safe conditions, suffer in any manner from being declawed.

My Mother spent 50 years of her life with declawed cats, and I was around all of them after I was born. I have never declawed a cat, and since my choice not to as an adult, she decided to look into it then stop doing it as well. But the important part of that story is that every single one of her cats that I saw loved her (and/or me), none of them ever had trouble with litter boxes, and they all lived full and long lives.

I wouldnt ever declaw a catunless medically advised. But I know from my personal history that declawing isnt the end of the world. So if it was recommended by a veterinarian due to an injury, and I had the money, I would do it.

My veterinarian wants to remove some of my cats teeth, just the premolars from my understanding, because that kitty has some autoimmune disorder it seems that is causing them to be easily and routinely infected. Apparently teeth removal is not even something thats as horrible as it sounds in veterinary medicine, and shouldnt impact her life at all. But even if I had the money, that just sounds too horrible for me to stomach.

So insteadIm giving her somewhat routine steroid shots to keep physical symptoms down and improve her quality of life. But I also know, while this path is the best for QoL, its also shortening her lifespan. So am I making the right or wrong choice?

But anyway, thats enough of an aside, I hope my experiences helped you come to a decision.

Edit: Strictly indoor cats. Thats an incredibly important qualifier that I neglected to mention. All of them were, and if yours is, then its going to be fine. But cats who go outdoors absolutely need their claws.

You're treating symptoms and ignoring the cause.

That's gonna come back on you.

Unfortunately, none of the Doctors at the vet can figure out the cause. Their best recommendation is to take her to a specialist to determine whats going on with her. But I simply dont have that kind of money. I could try and offer her up to someone else that could afford to take care of a cat with a serious condition, but I do love her and try my best, and you never know who is taking her.

It weighs on me, but I go to a free county clinic for my own needs, so she truly is getting better care than I am.

Doing something painful out of medical necessity is not the same as doing it just for the sake of it. If the vet thinks it's necessary, it doesn't hurt to get a second expert opinion especially if you can do so without causing significant delays, but beyond that it's very different and you should not feel bad about it.

A couple days ago, one of my cats became suddenly interested in a door chain that was like 5 or so feet off the floor. To reach it, he would have to jump. Jumping up and reaching it could have meant getting his claw stuck in a chain link. The thought of him getting stuck could have meant severely damaging his claw or his paw or his arm, and if that had happened while I was at work or asleep, could have meant being in intense pain or a slow death from blood loss.

I decided to remove the door chain after that thought process, as it was something that was left over from the previous owners and something I never had the intention of using. It's been over 3 years since adopting my boys and it's surprising and upsetting that I never thought about that chain being a danger in all this time.

I hope that whatever caused your kitty's claw damage has been removed as a hazard and that your sweet baby makes a good recovery.

My cat has something similar where some of his teeth have being anbsorbed into the jaw. Luckily it was just his front ones and he only has one of his angry teeth left. Looks funny when he gets angry though

Hes a rescue cat. Vet seems to think between 5 and 6. Got him and his brother. They were really scared when we first got them but three years on they are finally coming out of their shell.

Annoyingly when we got them this one (Garth) already had two teeth messed up that was completely missed by the shelter. Cost us about a grand to get sorted but managed to get it sorted on insurance eventually.

Here he is with his brother normally.

Such cute fur babies!

Suiko is about 3 now, and she was tiny with the cutest premature meow. It blows my mind the foster agency didnt realize something was wrong considering her size and weight, they just assumed she was a runt or something. I didnt question their statements until she went into shock and almost died a little over a year after I got her. She was about a year and a half old and weighed around 4 pounds when her body failed and we realized something was wrong with her.

But other than the long term effects from the steroids, shes doing fine now. Weighs around 9 pounds, loves to snuggle up against and lick me, and (comically, not tragically) seems to be a little mentally underdeveloped when it comes to cat etiquette. Thankfully my other one is a big fluffy sweet girl, and tolerates her invasive behavior very well.
