I'm glad that Pilot Candidate is only twelve episodes based on what everyone is saying about it! At least I won't suffer long. There are probably better shows in some of those earlier seasons that I could've downloaded when I got everything else. When I originally planned this, though, I was only going to do 20 years starting in 2005. Thats why I downloaded something as random as Starship Operators, nothing else caught my eye in Winter 2005.

and yeah, Boogiepop Phantom is an anime original sequel arc to the first novel in the series, Boogiepop and Others (I guess because the live action movie adaptation of the novel was successful) while the new Boogiepop and Others series is an adaptation of the first few novels. Most of Phantom is episodic stories about new characters.

I also couldn't find a good torrent for Eureka Seven, sadly. Same with Higurashi. I think those were the only two that people recommended that I didn't get when I was downloading everything.

It was the cat one. I searched by series name and sorted by seeders mostly. I'm just very much a noob at it. I think those two shows had too many sequels or spinoffs or alternative versions. I couldn't pick a definitive one to download so I gave up

Especially bas since you definitely don't want to or shouldn't watch anything that came after the initial series for either of those shows.

"Renowned Studio GoHands" is one way to put it, apparently they can't even make a promotional screenshot that doesn't somehow make me motion sick.

So I watched episode 1 of Undead Unluck and wow this show seems like its gonna be great.

I only watched a bit of the show, but it seemes like they were doing a great job with it.

I'm about halfway through where the manga is at I think, 101 chapters in. Been on hold for a bit, though.

If you like it that early I can only imagine you'll love it by the end. I genuinely did not like the beginning of UU but it improves by leaps and bounds.

Is this about the manga or the anime? The anime's definitely higher quality in its first half.

Just the manga, I haven't gotten around to the adaptation yet. But I know what it covers and at least plotwise it doesn't get to the stuff I like until the second cour.

The majority of what I assume would be the first cour of UU is pretty whatever in the grand scheme of things, I would assume around the second cour is when it gets to the first chunk of the good stuff.

However, I too don't know how that holds up in regards to the adaptation.

This seems kinda crazy to me. The first cour has a lot of the great worldbuilding, including the awesome Galaxy sequence, while the second cour focuses more on Under, which is an incredibly lame group.

I know the MAL score went down quite a bit as the second cour progressed too.

Ah, maybe have my chapter counts off a bit because I would assume Galaxy was more towards the end of the first cour.

I don't have the exact count as far as depth into the series, but everything prior to Galaxy is generally considered the weakest part of this manga for the content I've read into so far. The most common take for UU I've seen is that it starts weak and basically turns into a completely different manga from that point on.

I didn't have too much interest in the setting or characters until Billy got involved and the series put some more attention on the Union's character dynamics. The world building showed promise but the characters didn't grab me until after that point, and that's the critical part.

Hmm, I can kinda see that, but even the Gena stuff early on was great. Maybe it helps that the anime had fantastic production values and direction early on, while the second half is recap hell with One Piece anime pacing.

That would make sense. I switched to the Manga after the Gina content because I enjoyed it a lot, but that part was definitely not as good in the manga as it was in the anime.

If the budget crashes in the second cour that's a shame, but it would be extremely on brand for DavidPro after Fire Force. Hopefully they can bring it back for when the series truly takes off.

Bagging JoJo was the best thing that ever happened to them, literally nobody expects sakuga for JJBA fights lol.

Full Undead Unluck anime writeup since I beat it.

For the most part, I liked the show quite a bit. The cast is pretty good (though Fuuko isn't quite as strong as the others), and the worldbuilding is sublime. I love all the ways this world differs from regular Earth, the Rules are a ton of fun, and the UMAs are really cool too. The show hits some great emotional beats, too. Feels quite a bit darker than most Jump series, with tons of people dying all the time. The powers are really cool, and it's always neat to see a new character show what they can do. I don't think the human villains are that interesting in general, though. Under feels pointless. Why not just have Union fighting the UMAs? There's tons of potential for interesting stuff there. Rip is probably the worst character, basically being an annoying shit for all of his screentime, and incredibly stupid to boot (saying he'll use the Ark anyway after being told that doing so will kill his entire family and fail to save his dead sister lol). That'd be a minor problem if the show kept up its other strengths, since stuff like the Galaxy episode is so good. The Andy's past arc was fun (though I'm sure it's the first of many since he has a lot of past), and the Autumn arc was good too - Anno Un is an excellent character.

The problem is in the adaptation. It'd be great if I could just say this is a bad adaptation so you should skip it and read the manga (you probably should anyway), but it's really mixed. For the first half or so, it's perfect. Decently paced, fantastic animation, great direction, everything you could want. But at some point, it gets really recap heavy. Normally, this wouldn't be a bad thing, since I don't mind skipping recaps at the beginnings of episodes, but these ones are mixed in to the regular content in a bizarre fashion. People will be talking about the past, and then we get like a 15 second or 20 second or 90 second recap of a previous episode. And it happens all the time! They really wanted to stretch the show to end at a certain point I guess, but I wish they'd just done a 20 episode season instead of 24 episodes if they were gonna do that. I still like the show overall, but man, this could've been a classic.

At some point I'm going to have to see if I can pirate a version of Undead Unluck without close-captioned subtitles because I really want to watch it. Maybe it had normal English subs somewhere in the world or someone took the time to edit it for people like me. If only Disney+ didn't suck.

Typically any Hulu upload on the cat site is gonna have the CC removed. I've been grabbing the first releases of Ranger Reject and they're already gone. I think it's something that's easy to fix on the scripting side?

It's extra annoying because Disney+ is one of the few streaming services I have access to through family, now I have to risk getting in trouble for pirating because their subs are so lazy.

LOL at the second video. I don't usually mind CGI for monsters and such, like the dragon in Villainess Level 99 was fine. Those look terrible though. A badly drawn slideshow would be an improvement.

Last Exile came out in 2003 and had obvious but well integrated CG throughout the series. It was, frankly, revolutionary for anime.

This looks worse than Dokey Kong Country the Animed Series, and that is not hyperbolic.

Finished Apothecary Diaries.

Did not expect the direction it would go with her father in those last few episodes. The show did a good job of surprising me with some of the plots, was more complex than I expected it to be.

Overall a really good show, boosted by an amazing main character.

I'm probably going to give it a few more months before I got back and finish it. Just still need some more time separated from the manga.

For some reason thinking about AD makes me want to go back and rewatch Magi.....I don't know why, there's really no connection there. I never did watch that Sinbad spinoff series.

Another one of this shows that seems like the biggest thing in the world when it's airing but nobody talks about it at all anymore.

I was a bit sad that video glossed over the close-captioned subtitles, because that's my big problem with Disney+. It mostly focused on people not realizing shows exist because Disney doesn't promote them, but, pfft, I'm a big anime fan who checks MAL every season. That isn't a problem for me!

...Then partway through the video he mentioned a sequel to The Tatami Galaxy that came out in 2022 that I've never heard of. What the fuck? I even watched The Tatami Galaxy in 2022, how did I not know about this?

I 100% believe STR would have been one of the biggest anime in years as a simulcast on Crunchy. Probably around a Re:Zero level or so.

I've started the earliest shows in my seasonal watch project. I'll probably always have a few going simultaneously, but for the most part I'm working forward in time.

-Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I'm slowly making my way through. Sorry for the slow progress Martin, it's a long anime! I'll probably post more detailed thoughts when I reach something that feels like a natural midpoint.

-Revolutionary Girl Utena is really intriguing but tough to binge because parts of it make me sad. I barely even know what's going on, I just feel so bad for Anthy. Her rat friend Chuchu is my favorite character. It's also nice to finally see what everyone was talking about back when Revue Starlight was airing, there sure are a lot of parallels between the two shows.

-Lost Universe is a lot of fun so far! There's something about some of these older anime that can make them really charming. Like, the older art style really enhances the absurdity somehow. I mean look at this, it's great.

The series was split over 4 seasons, if it'd help to know where the seasons end so you could like, finish a season and set it aside to work on other stuff before returning to start a new season, these are the three "season finale" episode numbers

season 1: 26
season 2: 54
season 3: 86

No danger of me dropping it, I'm definitely enjoying it! That's a good idea too about giving it more focus and using the season episodes as stopping points. It'll definitely help motivate me

yeah, also I just realized the episodes really do feel like "finales" even if not expressly stated as such in the show themselves, so you probably don't even need to look at the numbers in the spoiler tags... but just in case, I guess.

Speaking of Tales, I wish non-related games would stop using "Tales of" as a title. There was that JRPG farming sim thing and now Tales of the Shire.

If Namco would just trademark that phrase (if they haven't already after 30 fucking years) this wouldn't happen. Get that Xenosaga trilogy remaster done too, dammit.
