incredible thing is, for how little anime I watch, the only one of the 10 I haven't seen is HxH. Which I guess I should add to the queue...

Also quality winners since Brotherhood is my #3 all-time and Monster is my #2, but there is only one Reinhard von Lohengramm (we don't count Die Neue These)

The topic came up earlier about the lack of manga discussion, so I figure just to get it out there easy I'd show my current Tachi library for everything I am actively reading, plan on reading, or plan on rereading.

The dreaded comic book is prevelant in here as well, avert your eyes if you are afraid of the infamous Superman.

If it's tough to narrow down due to ongoing series, could always do top ten manga that ended in the last decade. This might be tough to filter for tho.

Man, after episode 3, I'm really close to moving Unnamed Memory into the "bad" column. From what I've read elsewhere, it's really rushing through the source material and excising all the things I'd actually want to see. There weren't any good character moments to develop their relationship, so everything feels hollow and unearned. I get the sense that there's a good story in there somewhere, this adaptation just isn't telling it.

Same. There's no flow here at all, it just moves scene to scene, no establishing shots, awkward animation most of the time. It's very obvious something is off even without having read it. It's not completely incompetent or anything but it's clearly not great.

Just like Whisper Me a Love Song, it's a studio where it was assumed this would happen, but you always wanna give the benefit of the doubt. I really hope they don't screw up Medalist next year because I hear great things about that source material (I'll have read it myself long before the show airs I'm sure).

Gonna rewatch Gunslinger Girl again. First season anyway. Always had a fondness for it. The machinations of turning little girls into subservient mob killing machines, and the effects on both them and their handlers in a dark way. Second season is fine, but I grew to ignore it due to the visuals changing and the less than engaging storyline.

Besides, I'm getting stir crazy from Black Butler and Konosuba dubs not hitting yet. How many more days? Mrgrgr

This happened with Malevolent Spirits when it was airing a year or so ago. Seemed great even if the anime wasn't super impressive, so I went to read and it was hundreds of chapters untranslated. Haven't encountered that in a loooong time.

Checked out the Voice Actor Radio manga out of curiosity after today's episode and I strongly regret it.

The manga is much better than the anime. I think the anime is just fine, but it's night and day, the art in the manga is actually really good and all the scenes are more fleshed out. Unfortunately there's only, like, 3 more episodes worth of content translated for the manga so far, so I can't just switch over entirely.

Obviously I could just read the LNs now that I'm interested, but I never end up following through with that despite the Bookwalker app being installed on all my devices lol.

I'm surprised, typically I find that LN source material usually ends up with a better anime than manga. Maybe that's just confirmation bias with the ones I've tried in the past.

I'm actually not minding Whisper Me a Love Song so far. It definitely doesn't have impressive production values or anything, but it's taking its time and showing the development of the relationship between the characters. That's more than I can say for Unnamed Memory after ep3...

i was skim checking the comments after my last post on the prior topic and i noticed some talk about 2014's anime, and since that was one of the years i watched a decent amount(https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/b/bb581ae9.png) i figured i might as well say what my favourites that year were

i get it wasn't for everyone by then but liked the conclusion to initial d a lot and still consider it a ways better than mf ghost s1 at a minimum
yama no susume s2 is a top 10 anime season for me of anything so that alone definitely carries the year for me
madoka clones as they may have been, yuuki yuuna and selector infected+spread wixoss were both amazing imo
kawai complex was legit tbh
mekakucity was also a strong showing and underappreciated given it was still in the middle of peak monogatari years (and nisekoi was there too i guess)
wake up girls is still one of the most uniquely worthwhile idol anime and it deserved a lot better at the time (even if it fell off in quality hard past s2)
a lot of anticipated shows of the time fell off in due course, such as aldnoah, terror in resonance, trinity seven, mahouka, black bullet, tokyo ghoul, glasslip, (maybe) m3, and chaika... but some were still at least solid even while underperforming, which is why i'm not putting akame ga kill, shingeki no bahamut or noragami in the same category personally (i get others definitely would disagree though)
besides yamasusu s2, while 2014 did lack the presence of stuff like kiniro mosaic or non non biyori on the cgdct/iyashikei front, it did also have gochiusa and somewhat unique productions like hanayamata and sora no method to make up for it

and short anime had arguably their peak year then, with ai mai mii s2, both seasons of strange+, hacka doll and tesagure s2 all among my favourites in that niche, even if one DOESN'T of course count yamasusu s2 lol (and they're unlikely to ever leave that upper eschelon given the state of modern short anime...)

on the ova side, the japan animator expo series brought about a lot of great pilots, and the young animator training project then known as anime mirai also had a strong year then too (even if the projects then never got the recognition little witch academia or death billiards did). it was a bit of a nothing year for feature length films though, outside of marnie and expelled from paradise if you want to be exceedingly generous (i wouldn't even be putting it in the discussion as a key film release if not for the sequel tbh)

You can always count on UF8 to be throurough.

2014 was indeed an interesting year. Funnily enough, it was that list of anticipated shows that really gave off the impression of mediocrity. So many series that year started off with potential and just fizzled away. The difference, though, is that I actually finished most of those at the time, when nowadays I likely would have dropped them.

At least the figure itself is fine. Still, what a literal and figurative pain to bring a figure home just for the extra bit to be a piece of shit and to hurt me at the same time.

I'm not sure if anyone else will be interested in this, but I'm sharing it anyway! Back when I finished my 400th anime, I mentioned that what I've seen is heavily skewed towards more recent years. Only 31 were from 2010 or earlier compared to 73 from 2018 alone. Well, I wanted to try and balance that a little.

I've put together a list of one anime per season, and I'm going to start at the beginning and slowly make my way through it. It goes primarily from 1999 to 2023, but I couldn't find anything for Summer 2000 (there were only five new anime that season I mean wtf) and there were two seasons in 2018 where I've already seen pretty much everything. I substituted those with one anime per year from 1998, 1997, and 1988 to reach a total of 100 anime. I would've gone back further but there simply weren't that many shows debuting per season in the 90s and very few are available on streaming.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t_nYA59DR6AsZJvCk8l1AiuPRnF9jE0l6IWUqzAdatA/edit#gid=0

I'm only counting the debut year for anime with more than one season, but obviously I plan to watch everything once I get to them. It was rough finding shows for a few of these seasons. I'm going to have to go to Tubi of all places to watch "Arjuna" for Winter 2001. Still, a lot of anime that people recommended I download are on this thing, so thank you to everyone who helped me fill it out! I'll accept any criticism of my choices or suggestions for changes if anyone cares to look into it. I'm excited to watch most of these, though. A lot of them are anime I always wanted to watch but never got around to.

I won't exclusively watch things from this list. There are still a handful of shows I'm halfway through and need to finish, plus I may still watch the occasional random anime. I'm excited to get started on this project, though!

Dang, was gonna recommend Potemayo, but you've got an even better show for that season. Ah well.

I will say Rosario + Vampire's a bit of an odd choice for Winter 2008, unless you really want a fanservice-heavy harem show. Ignoring, sequels, my picks for that season would be:

Spice and Wolf the original (though of course, feel free to watch the new one instead)
Shigofumi
True Tears
Mnemosyne (probably not a you show)

Even They Are My Noble Masters is probably a better fanservice harem, especially since it has an actual ending :p

Oh I thought he had Shigofumi but I was mixing it up with Letter Bee lol.

As someone who has been getting shit by IRL friends for liking Mnemosyne and still standing by it....not a Roba show lol. Hand to God I was on a Discord convo with an extremely like minded friend last night and he asked me if there was anything I genuinely liked that I knew he would absolutely hate, and Mnemosyne is the first thing that came to mind.

Every other show I would recommend that season is a sequel.....Spice & Wolf really did not have any competition to worry about, huh?

I almost watched Rosario back when it aired, just because I thought the purple haired girl was extremely cute. Didn't do it though.

Why would you pick something other than GTO for Summer 1999? I'm not as high on it as most people are, but it's way above everything else that season in popularity and average score on MAL.

Thanks for the thoughts on my list so far, everyone. I'll reply to as much as I can.

-I haven't even heard of the Bee Train girls with guns trilogy, but the idea of it definitely appeals to me! I'll see how I feel about Noir first and then maybe look the other two up after.

-That Medabots season in Summer 2000 is a sequel season and therefore doesn't count (even if I wanted to watch Medabots, I usually avoid anything that seems too geared towards children). Summer 2000 simply doesn't have anything I can watch.

-Regarding Pilot Candidate, I don't have any other options that season so I'm stuck with it even if it sucks. I'd watch the original Boogiepop but the reboot of it is one of the anime I'm currently halfway through.

-I thought Rosario + Vampire looked fun, but I'm not exactly excited for it. Maybe I'll switch to True Tears, thanks Mac. Now I'm also curious about that Mnemosyne show I'll apparently hate, though!

-Two people warned me away from Familiar of Zero, so I guess I will swap in Welcome to the NHK. Thanks pyresword and Xeybozn.

-I picked Legend of the Black Heaven over Great Teacher Onizuka because Black Heaven had slice-of-life and sci-fi tags. I was hoping that would overpower my aversion to black metal music. Strife saying it was bleh and has adultery is turning me off from it, though. So I'll swap in... Magic User's Club for Summer 1999. Sorry GTO! You can't beat cute witches.

So I can't edit the spreadsheet until I get home but these are the changes:

-Summer 1999 is Magic User's Club instead of Legend of the Black Heaven
-Summer 2006 is Welcome to the NHK instead of The Familiar of Zero
-Winter 2008 is True Tears instead of Rosario + Vampire

Boogiepop and Others is actually a prequel to Boogiepop Phantom!

Interesting, I remember seeing somewhere that it was in the category of "remake obsoletes original" like the new Fruit Baskets. Maybe I will watch it at some point, but it'll be separate from this season project

True Tears that is a show I completely forgot about, but I thought it was solid.

Also curious what you think of Tari Tari which has always been near the top of my list of undeservedly overlooked anime

I like the Zero no Tsukaima novels, but the anime is a complete dumpster fire of an adaptation that cuts pretty much all the plot and characterization.

Same thing goes for Rosario + Vampire. The manga's an ok enough battle harem series, but the anime basically cut all the plot and action scenes.

and yeah, Boogiepop Phantom is an anime original sequel arc to the first novel in the series, Boogiepop and Others (I guess because the live action movie adaptation of the novel was successful) while the new Boogiepop and Others series is an adaptation of the first few novels. Most of Phantom is episodic stories about new characters.

The only certain death in the universe is Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons.
Not changing this line until I beat Seven Heroes (2/24/07) - Fulfilled 2/20/18

So, when I was in high school way back when, the library actually had the first couple volumes of the manga for Pilot Candidate

It is so bad that I completely forgot about it until seeing the name again here. But it is not memorably bad, or "so bad it's good". It's just awful.
