Like, I Gen Z and to a greater extent alpha play games, but 90% of them play like 1 or 2 super popular games. Like my lil cousins only play Roblox, or Fortnite, or PubG but they don't even know what an RPG is.

probably not

they haven't reached the age of not giving a fuck yet

also those games you're thinking are more casual...those are always competitive. kids nowadays would think old school RPGs where you can just grind and farm the best stuff on your own pace were easy.

Some of the wildest takes on games I've heard more from Millenials than zoomers, so not really.

I don't know if they're necessarily more casual but I would say they play a much narrower selection of games.

I certainly don't interact w/ a lot of gen z on any kind of regular basis, but from my nieces / nephews and friends kids, none of them are nearly as serious about gaming as any of us were - but maybe that's cuz we're huge nerds and they're trying NOT to be that lol

although I guess there probably is less desire to win vs another player/child and more desire to win vs the video game companies that control the reward RNG. which is a good thing

I think as a whole, yes. The generation that grew up on mobile games are probably more casual.

That being said, their generation was also the first to grow up in a time where being a streamer/esport personality was a real possibility, so I still feel like there's a decent pocket of extremely hardcore gamers, possibly more hardcore than other generations.

I would argue that they are more competitive. The best gamers right now in the pro scene are teens. They are born in an era of meta and have tons of access to gaming tutorials. Older gamers are the last generation to have the option to play casually. You can't even play Smash with friends without people using techniques learned from online guides or pro players.
