For the same reason why people on the east coast (including Ontario) and parts of the south pronounce Oregon as "Oreh-gone", while the rest of the country (including British Columbia) pronounce it correctly.

Fun fact

I legit had no idea chic and chic were the same word for years. Nobody really uses it anymore but back when they did, it took me a looooong time to realize it. If someone had explained that this was a French word, I might have been able to piece it together, but "sheek" sounds pretty much like a lot of English words (sheer, sheep, sheet) that definitely don't begin with "chi."
