The due date was a couple days ago.

I have only ever been employed by the United States Federal Government and I have always gotten money back from them.

So not only do they give me a paycheck paid for by taxes, they take some of that money back in taxes, and take too much out and thus have to give me money back at the end of the year. Truly the most government of logic.

I've managed to always get back money from both ever since I first started needing to file my taxes. I get back less than $1000 total, but I'm certainly not complaining.

Usually get back a little bit

I think I got back like $100 in state this year.

Got back 2200 or something in Federal. The 2k was from child tax credit, so I was close to breaking even if not for that.

I have owed a few times, especially in the last few years due to the dumb changes in regards to claims.

Got put in the wrong bracket this year so we owed about $4000 federal. After deductions we still owed about $3000. Luckily we got back almost exactly the same amount from state taxes also due to a clerical fuckup. We ended up getting ~$100 back at the end.

Usually I get a small refund.

If you are consistently owing a lot or getting a lot back then your withholding is wrong. If you work a regular W-2 job you can fix that easily. If you get income outside of a W-2 then it can get more complicated but it's still something you can correct if you feel like it.

It's not a big deal if you owe and it's under the safe harbor rules so you don't get penalized. But if you're consistently getting money back then that's money that you were supposed to have during the year, and you accidentally gave the government an interest-free loan.

I usually put money in my retirement at tax time, so I owe initially, but then get money back if I invest that year. So usually a return of about $500 or so. Or I pay in about $50-100 if I can't afford to invest that year.

Federal yes
State no

I withold my earnings but the past few years I've owed the state.

I just take the standard deduction.

I don't care about withholding part. I don't like fussing with taxes. I just import my w2 and a half hour later I am done.

Time can be measured in money and money in time. The time and hassle it saves me is worth compared to whatever extra I might eek out not withholding.

Ive owed a few times, usually I get money back.

The times I owed was when I worked out of state (I was in Florida which I heard didnt even have state taxes ? It was over a decade ago so I dont remember much other than I owed), when I didnt have insurance but also didnt have money to enroll in an insurance policy, and then again when I was enrolled but my employment changed right after I registered for insurance so I ended up not paying as much as I should have been paying monthly on my marketplace insurance and owed money for that.

I actually owed exactly $11 on federal this year. So I guess you got my $11.

I ended up getting a little over $400 from the state. 2023 was the first full year I lived in MA so I don't have any other years to compare it to.

they aren't "taking" your money per se (your employers i mean), they are holding it for you to ensure your taxes get paid. it's not like they can just spend it willy nilly, they report everything to the state/fed (atleast they should) and have to have those funds available at all times. depending on what kind of work you do/who your employers are, they don't really need to hold it at all, but that's something you have to work out with your individual employer. wouldn't recommend that though unless you really are on top of what your income is and aware of your tax rates and whatnot.

them paying you less and saying "hey instead of paying you, we're just going to short change you and say we held what you owe in taxes" is way too likely to go wrong for everybody, but you especially as if you don't pay your taxes, you're the one fucked over. and for income tax, if you make less, the gov't gets less (in theory) so the gov't doesn't want employers to do that either.

Which is stupid. The whole process is stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

The theory is, you can defer your taxes and pay them at the end of the year so you can collect interest on them, OR you can choose to overpay all year just so you can get a check containing your own money after tax season. The former is stupid because short term investment rates are virtually zero for most people, and the latter is stupid because, well, DUH.

I just want a checkmark that says "however much means I'll owe exactly zero next April," or even just a server I can query to calculate exactly that, but oh no they ain't gonna do that thanks to doofuses who think they can get more than a couple of pennies in interest. Instead they give you this complicated "New math" formula where you're putting numbers in specific boxes and whatnot that still arrives you at a number that never ends up actually working in April.
