It will now be easier to change your gender from a legal standpoint (what it says on your ID etc). This will make our law on the issue more similar to the other Nordic countries.

234 MPs voted yes, 93 voted no and 21 were absent.

The four opposition parties (Socialdemocrats, Greens, Far-Left and Neoliberals) voted yes as well as two Government parties (Conservatives and Liberals).

The Christian Democrats and the Governments support party the Sweden Democrats (Far-Right) voted no. One SocDem and one Conservative broke with party lines and voted no as well.

Agreed! Im glad it passed. Seemed very uncertain until the vote actually took place how it would go.

It is. Cuz even smaller parties get some wins in Government coalitions.

Cool.

Got a question.

If you are transgendered and change your gender at a later date (think 20s or older), do the surgery, take the hormone pills, etc, are you obligated to get a new passport photo, or can you keep the same one until it expires?

(It can be answered from any country. I'm not trans, just curious how it works with government paperwork bullshit).

I wish I knew but I dont. I would assume you need to get a new one in Sweden though because changing gender gives you a new personnummer (social security number kinda). And they take a new photo when you make a new id.

21 were absent or 21 were abstain? Can you take a day off for something like voting in laws?

Transgender is an adjective, not a noun or a verb (like if someone is tall or short, for example.) It can be offensive to refer to someone as transgendered, or especially if its used as a noun to refer to someone.

Typically, trans people benefit from having their documents match their presentation. Its much less hassle and wasted time.

I didn't know that could be considered offensive. Thanks for the tidbit!

i have not looked deeply into this law
but most of the talk i keep seeing paints a picture of majority of people being critical of it, for reasons i don't fully understand

The way l understand it, most seems to follow the "they are too young to understand the drastic changes in their bodies in case they are wrong" train.
Uppdrag Granskning have got a lot of shit over the years for pointing out that many have seen transition as the ultimate solution to their problems, even if they are not really transgender, and later regret that they did it. Im pretty sure those programs have been in the mind of some of our law voters.

Glad to see that Sweden seems to not be controlled by fascists, theocrats, and psychopaths, and is willing to just let people live the way they want to. Wish I could say the same of all countries.

In germany there is a new trans law coming too (probably getting active in half a year).

It's mostly great because it's about changing your legal gender with no requirements behind (except that you have to do it two formal requests at least 3 months in between), but there are still some... awkward parts.
