This is my new go-to for taxes.

Not only is the service free, but e-filing state is free too. I have no idea why TT charges $20 to e-file your state on top of the ludicrous amount you already paid for their software. They can take a hike.

I don't think I qualified for that because I had to do schedule C. Some of those free ones only give you certain forms and ask you to pay for anything more complex.

Free, *for now*

I don't think they'd introduce a feature without plans to monetize it.

think freetaxusa is only free if you make less than a certain amount. or that only filing for federal taxes are free, but you still pay state.

Next year I'm gonna try to do my own damn taxes.

There is literally no way it's harder than trying to get TurboTax to cooperate.

They probably profit from your info in some way also. I wouldn't be surprised if they start charging when enough people are using it. As long as it's cheaper than TurboTax I'd pay a little something.

I've been using Credit Karma for my taxes since they started offering it. I used Turbo Tax before that and they were free then.

Every time I've used TurboTax, it was free

Back when there was the controversy about TurboTax hiding their "free file" option (and subsequently removed it), I tried FreeTaxUSA and they wanted to charge me $20

while ironically enough, TurboTax was/is still free for me

Is it like a super basic version or something? I don't know why anyone would pay for it if it's free. Mine was a little more complicated this year because I'm considered a business (lol) and I'd have to buy the $100 version of TT if I stuck with them. Then pay another $20 to e-file state.

I mean, I'm just some random person

If you're "considered a business", you're probably making too much to qualify for their free basic version

That feature cost $60 for me.

Not counting the extra $12 for other bullshit, like convenience fees and I forget what all else.

yeah they definitely charge people on an income-based case-by-case basis it seems

I somehow ended up with a $1200 refund when I was expecting to owe this year.

Hopefully I didn't fuck something up. It seemed pretty straight forward.

That can probably happen if you mess up IRA contributions, like put your ROTH numbers in the traditional one.

Turbo Tax tried to charge me $200 at the end. I said fuck that. I tried to put a discount code and it didn't seem to apply.

I picked the higher tiered option, but didn't end up needing any help/support. That was my mistake. Turbo tax only shows fees for federal which was like $139. State was another 60. I ended up going to HR & Block in person for $159. I usually do it with a small business but don't feel like driving 80 miles round trip. And they aren't available on weekdays anymore.

Next time I won't wait until the last minute.

Turbo Tax? This confused me. I don't get why they had a separate section for that. I skipped it entirely. cause it takes it out if my w2 statement.
