Would you want this in America for buying tickets, buying consoles on launch day, etc.

I actually entered a lottery once. I wasn't eligible to win because I didn't have a Japanese phone number but I got the free digital goodies I that everyone else got.

I remember when Newegg was doing that during covid with video cards. Then they jacked up the price, essentially scalping them like ebay sellers. I "won" once but didn't buy it.

I don't remember them doing that. But I do remember them bundling them with those Gigabyte PSUs that were known to fry the computer spectacularly, and components that weren't even compatible with the rest of the parts (like DDR4 for a DDR5 motherboard, or a PSU that was too small for the GPU.)

It's still wild to me that they had Vietnam draft lotteries. Like they aired on TV and radio the same way a regular lottery where they pull numbers out of a wheel, but it was to go kill or be killed.

I don't mind having lottery systems but it does suck if you don't win and are basically SoL not having a chance to either buy a piece of merch you really wanted or can't see a show.

This is one of the things that sucks about entering lotteries in Japan as a foreigner. Only recently have some organizers helped remedy this by having a separate smaller pool for foreigners but for a lot of things it's still stuck to residents only.

I was ok with it. Chances I'd have been able to go if I won were pretty small anyway. I just wanted my codes.

It was called the Newegg Shuffle. You had to enter every time, then get an email if you were selected to buy something. The page is still up if you google it.

It was mostly GPUs bundled with stuff like motherboards and coolers, but sometimes they had just a single card. I won a bundle with some motherboard I didn't need so passed.

I've lived in Japan off and on for a total of 8 years and never once had to any of those lotteries.
