The acclaimed open world action RPG is "underperforming" where its sales are concerned. The action RPG is selling about half as well as Final Fantasy 7 Remake did in the same post-launch timeframe, and its also likely to have slower long-term sales than its predecessor.

The third game will likely do even worse, as it becomes harder to sell sequels the farther into the series you get. Its a big ask for people to play two or three hundred hour games just to catch up. And then you also have people who drop off the wagon as well.

Exclusivity isn't helping either

They should not have made it PlayStation only.

Being on multiplatforms probably wouldn't help that much. This remake trilogy is going to end up like the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy where each game sells significantly worse than the last

Hopefully this wakes SE up to how not doing PC day 1 is bad business and they don't repeat the same mistake for part 3

Selling less than XVI is the real kicker.

I heard the game is very good. Also, Square Enix has supposed plans to go beyond 3. They want to keep the story going past the original ff7 plot

I wish. SE is sometimes set in their ways and determined to find failure though. I think Helldivers 2 got Sony thinking day 1 releases on PC might actually be a good idea but we will see if SE is still trying for the exclusivity money.

I think it has to be suffering from sequelitis than PS5 exclusivity. After all it didn't hurt Final Fantasy 16 as much.

If someone didn't buy Remake, they're not going to buy Rebirth even if Rebirth is considered a much better game. Players don't feel obligated to play Rebirth until they play Remake, and you still have those who are holding out until every single piece of the Final Fantasy 7 remake compilation is out. Not to mention those who played Remake and didn't like it aren't going to have their minds changed if Rebirth got a better metacritic.

They should have not done the dogshit story changes and not made the middle part a hundred hour slog full of filler crap

Well like I said, it may never be completed. Unless you just play the first 3 and don't care about the FF7 Expanded Universe

Hmm I wonder why? They split a classic into 3 parts and I bet a significant portion of people who loved FF7 as a kid and only have a PS5 so that their own kid/s can play Fortnite were bummed when it was not the entire game and they now have to drop $150 MORE on their babysitting device.

It's not PS5 exclusivity specifically I think. A lot of it goes back to Remake too. That was PS4 exclusive, then on Epic Store for a timed period and then finally ended up on Steam over two years after its initial launch. Now here we are again and no sign of a Steam release.

Playstation isn't the JRPG machine anymore. Hasn't been for a long time. Obviously it can't run well on Switch but no PC is dumb.

But also Final Fantasy itself peaked with VII nearly 30 years ago. Why would anyone under 30 care about any of these games?

PS4 had one of the largest console install bases of all time, of course a ps5 exclusive would do worse. Plus some people didnt like the direction the remake took and are no longer interested in the trilogy, that hurts sales as well.

Why anybody expected it to do better is beyond me.

I'm doing the same. I'll play it once there's some ultimate edition with all three games. I'm not hurting for things to play in the meantime.

You're going to get burned out before finishing them if you do it that way. It's going to run up to 200-300 hours altogether when the trilogy is finished.

It would be the equivalent of playing all three Xenoblades back to back.

They learned nothing from the one way descent of the FF 13 trilogy.

I think overall the Final Fantasy VII Remake is a decade too late. It would have sold better during the PS3 generation. That was when the hype for this was at full steam. Oh well.

I don't think teenagers of today could give a single shit about this game or series at this point.

In the long run it'll be fine. They'll re-release it and bundle it as long as video games exist.

It's both being a console exclusive and it being a "sequel" of a story heavy game are both contributors to why it won't sell as good as Remake. With that said, sales for it will jump again once it's available for PC. With that said, this is still all speculation. Wait for the real numbers from SE themselves to see if it reached expectations or not. It's also just like with Movie studios that sometimes you fund a movie not because it will make money back, but because it adds value to your existing library. A lot of Martin Scorcesee movies did not perform well, but studios still fund his movies because they know he will make movies at a High Quality level to give their brand value. It's the same with games, whether you like or dislike FF7R games they do add a certain value to the SE brand as a whole. With that said, I personally don't care for FF7 as a whole so I don't think I will be buying the games anytime soon.

Final Fantasy needs to be on PC day one. If Square-Enix aren't going to treat Final Fantasy as a priority then neither will PC gamers.

Perhaps but it's not a great long term move. Less sales now means there's less to work with later. Sony isn't going to pay forever.

Each title gave us diminishing returns from a base game that wasnt that great to begin with so after XIII-2 I checked out.

TC use your brain. FF7 Remake was on PS4 and PS5. It also had an Intergrade version. Of course Remake sold more. Not as many PS5s are in every home like the PS4 was by this point and its a sequel thats reliant on people playing Remake lol.

Also anyone saying its supposed to be a 3 parter and are mad its not all on my disc have no idea what theyre talking about.

I don't think there's many of those either outside of like niche strategy games and low budget indies that can't afford to port.

I mean, it's billing itself as a part 2. Who is going to buy that one first? Sp it's audience is narrowed to people who finished the first game and want to continue by default. That's the double edge sword doing ff7 as a serialized game. $70 isn't a price many people would on a whim pick up the second one for if they were not already commited.
