They brought him in to voice random NPCs, and then were like "okay, but what if we had you voice this character instead?"

There were a ton of large names, many who did minor characters in this. Cristina Vee voiced random nameless villagers in this as well.

Matthew Mercer is a well-known VA. Now known for doing tabletop DnD game shows, but he still does voice work, too.

I think his first major voicing role was Leon Kennedy in the original RE2.

Matt Mercer is probably best known for being the dungeon master for Critical Role (by far the biggest D&D actual play show on the internet). But the dude's list of credits would stretch half way around the goddamn globe. He's an incredible voice acter and he's in everything. Seriously, just go to his IMDB and start scrolling. You've heard his voice before, I guarantee it. And he does seem to be a genuinely great dude as far as I'm aware.

I remember when he was mostly seen as doing the roles Troy Baker would not do anymore after going full union...but now he's doing more then Troy.

I mean he was Ganondorf, he took Steve's role as Vincent, he's in Persona 5, Balder's Gate 3, he leveled up to one of the top VA's at the moment.

I was looking through the voice cast of background characters and nearly everyone I could think of was in there. Plus Arin Hanson, that one was weird.

Also this makes me wonder how actor contracts work, that they can just sorta throw this at him randomly like that.

Matt mercer used to be called the budget troy baker because he used to be the replacement voice for a lot of the anime and japanese video game VA roles troy left (One of the more famous ones is kanji in persona 4 golden replacing troy's kanji in PS2 persona 4. Also yamato from naruto shippuden. Like not in a insult way, but in a "hes good and basically sounds like a exact copy" kind of thing). You can see the pretty sizeable list for the amount of times matt took over a role that troy used to have:
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/MatthewMercer

Matt mercer is good though and came into his own years ago. Its at that point where we need a budget matt mercer that was a budget troy baker.

Matt did eventually get tired of the budget troy baker thing though and that is the reason he turned down voicing yuri for that tales of vesperia definitive edition release.

In the gaming studios I've worked in, the writing team would pitch the script to the director and he'd personally work to contact agents to cast the roles, since he'd already know from the finance dudes what's going on.

In indie studios, you'd be surprised how far a nice DM and asking their line rate gets you. A lot of the recurring VA are surprisingly affordable, and bored celebrities can happen. E.G: Sean Bean only wanted like 1k for Kholat for whatever reason.

Edit: In a huge AAA budget like this, Matt Mercer was obviously offered a generous salary for some easy work and he took the bait, or the same thing happened but they obviously offered him a better contract right after the gag.

They are but a lot of them are unionized so they don't get as many roles anymore. Yuri Lowenthal was doing NPC work for a while in like CoD and stuff until he got the Peter Parker role, IIRC.

Yeah, CR absolutely makes enough money that he and all the rest could probably stop voice acting if they wanted to.

But realistically, the party really just need to get together for a few hours a week to play DnD to keep the CR money rolling in. May as well make extra money VAing on the side. Also keeps up your portfolio if/when CR ever loses popularity. Matt's a bit more insane though, he's doing a fair bit more than just showing up and playing since he's the GM.
